Burning small nudge of audio into the file.
I'm trying to streamline a workflow for time/phase aligning recorded live drums with multiple mics.
When I've worked out by how many samples I wish to move each track, I want to burn this into each source file so that the clip is still aligned with other clips in the edit window starting and finishing at the same time but that the audio within the clip has been slightly shifted. In this way, the clips are neatly arranged and when I send to collaborators I will know that they are hearing the tracks as I wanted without any risk of accidental change, for example if I had used the AVID Time Adjuster plugin or had entered a track specific delay compensation value. I thought this would be simple by rendering the time shift using the AVID Time Adjuster via Audiosuite but the plugin doesn't have an Audiosuite version. The clips represent the whole audio files and so they presumably don't have handles and would perhaps explain why I can't seem to use the nudge audio within clip using the "Slip mode holding down Control key" method. What I'm trying to do sounds simple but I'm not experienced enough at editing to make this as simple as I hoped. Any ideas from the experts? |

Re: Burning small nudge of audio into the file.
Time align all your clips on the tracks as you want them.
Select all clips on the track highlighting from the start to finish that you want. Consolidate clips SHIFT+OPT+3 (Mac) Or it’s under the edit menu Consolidate Clips This renders their alignment and create a new whole clip for the duration you selected. |

Yes, and for many other purposes consolidating comes in handy. But is that really necessary? Just use time adjuster plugin (and I would recommend Eventide's here) and be done with it. Consumes negligible CPU but takes one plugin slot.

Re: Burning small nudge of audio into the file.
The OP wants the alignment rendered to a specific length so all clips and tracks start and end at the same place.
“ I want to burn this into each source file so that the clip is still aligned with other clips in the edit window starting and finishing at the same time” Therefore it’s either use Time Adjuster as a track plug-in then Commit the track to selection or edit so it’s aligned and consolidate. 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. |

For me, perhaps it's more a question of workflow and making a psychological break between technical and creative tasks. I want to prep all the tracks, doing initial gain trims, comping, removing unwanted sounds, timing and pitch corrections and have those burnt into a stable foundation so that all tracks start and finish at the same time and all plugin slots are effectively empty. I can share the tracks and sessions like that if required, knowing that it will open and sound as expected on any PT systems. That's the idea that seems to make sense to me, not that I have huge experience! |
