Default Mic clarity

I've had the mbox for a few months now. I am brand new to recording. I bought the mbox to just get started, but I splurged and bought a nice mic to begin the learning curve. In experiementing with miking an acoustic guitar I have been using my AKG 414 TLII and have gotten great sound. Two things:
1. it seems that I keep having to turn the pres up hotter and hotter to get a good signal.
2. when trying to mike stereo I have added my only other mic...a SM57. I have to turn the pre up really hot to get any signal from it. When the tones start to sound good, I also get more white noise...even a very tiny bit of crackling.

Is this because the focusrite pres are poor. Do I need to buy another pre to boost the signal and avoid the white noise? Any suggestions?
