Default long delay when recording or playing back

Hi there.

I've had a look through previous posts, but can't find the right answers, or they are so complicated I don't understand them as I am not a very experienced audio gear user. Maybe someone can help me?

I am using an 002r / PT 7.3.1 on a Powerbook G4 running OS 10.4.11 recording onto an external LaCie 500 firewire drive currently daisychained to the 002r (though have tried the 800 port from the powerbook too).

I want to record up to 12 channels, no plug ins are being used.

When I press record there is a long delay, up to 30 seconds sometimes, and then recording goes ahead. Once it records it all runs smoothly. I have the same problem with playback.

Sometimes I get the 6086 error message, sometimes I get 9128. I have tried decreasing and increasing H/W Buffer and CPU Usage to see if there's a difference, but all settings seem to be the same?

Any ideas anyone? Thanks!

Try changing Record Allocation. It's in prefs under the Operation tab, right hand side. Open-Ended Record Allocation: tell it to limit to, say, 10 minutes, or whatever you think you might need in the longest cases.
