Default Just bought a new 27" iMac for PT9, worth upgrading RAM past 8gb?

So I just plumped down £2,500 on a shiny new 27" iMac, i7 processor, 8gb of RAM, 256gb SSD + 2TB HDD, etc.

Since I can get 4x4gb chips from Crucial to upgrade it to 16gb for another like, £160 (instead of the insane £600 Apple wanted).. should I?

I'm not sure how the RAM limits work with Macs, I know since it's not a 64-bit app, in Windows it can't use more than 3gb anyway, but £160 is nothing on top of that £2,500 and I totally don't mind spending it to double the RAM up again if it's going to give me better performance when using lots of plugins simultaneously, etc.

Thoughts? :)

Why? Pro Tools isn't even using all of your current 8Gigs of ram. Save your money!

Well, that was my question. Does PT9 on a Mac have the same RAM limitations as PT9 on Windows, i.e. can it only use 3gb for the entire project, including separate plug-ins, etc?

And out of curiosity if anyone knows, would Logic 9 use 16gb?

PT 9 will use up to 4gb... I believe. Maybe someone can chime in if I'm way off!

Yes in 64-bit mode. I use it as of now, plus with it's Node app. my Wifes iMac can be used for extra CPU when using EXS's hahaha.
I really like Pro Tools, I really do. But....

Anybody able to verify that upgrading an iMac to 16gb for Pro Tools would be useless?

Useless. -- that is until PT goes 64-bit.

Unless you are running software like BiDule or VE Pro.

Well not really. You have to keep in mind a couple important caveats. Bidule x64 for Mac is only a beta version so far. Then both VEPro and Bidule connect with PT9 via REWIRE AND RTAS neither of which are 64bit pathways. Though I agree.. that running your VE's in x64 is an application where having more ram would be worth it. But then RTAS is still a bottleneck.

Oki doke. And presumably Pro Tools won't be 64-bit for several years yet, due to Avid's laziness? Yes, I said it.
