Another time it was caused by an external thunderbolt dock, whereas writing files to an internal drive was instantaneous.
It may not be your problem, but worth a try.

A good quick test if you have space may be to drag a copy of that session to the internal super fast NVMe SSD and try running it there.

And what is your disk cache meter showing??
Good suggestion Cheese, so I copied a session to my internal drive but the behavior is exactly the same.

My drive is an OWC SSD 250 with USB 3 cable, connected directly to the Mac. Formatted Mac OS Extended, GUID.

Disk Cache meter - you mean in System Usage? In this session it's reading 5%.

Sorry it didn't work.
I've had Pro Tools not responding messages that seemed to be caused by a previous version of Eucon. Are you running an old version of Eucon? Try quitting it and trying the same thing.
Do you have re-wire running in the session, that's also caused problems for me.
Otherwise I'm out of ideas. I run RX9 de-reverb and Dialogue Isolate all the time and no beachballs here, so I doubt it's an RX thing.
