PT 10.3.6 or 10.3.7 should work okay on your MacBook Pro. You need either of those two versions if you hope to also run PT 11.0.1 on that computer.

What we need to help with the rest of your question is more info: exact model specs of your computer, how much ram, what are you using for audio I/O, the rest of your setup, etc. Have you done the needed optimizations? Pro Tools can and will crash if certain things are not done. You're also going to need at least one and possibly two external hard drives for recording. One for PT to record to as it's not recommended to record to the system drive, and a second external drive if you're using virtual instrument samplers like Kontakt 5.
