Default Expander/Gate Dyn 3

I thought this device functioned a lot different than I thought it would. Aparrently it raises the volume of the track reflective of the key input's volume as it passes threshold. I thought I was going to be able to disable audio for my gated track when the gate's key input was below threshold. I want a gate that does not effect(only disable) the timbre or volume of the track it is on.

I want the gate to disable audio when it's key input is not surpassing threshold.

NOTE : I've seen synth pads enabled only on drum hits. The gate was placed on the synth pads track and the gate's key input was the drum hits track.

Problem : The louder my gates key input bus gets, the louder my gated track gets.

And the answer is...RTFM

The purpose of a gate is to "duck" the signal on one track when the signal level on another track exceeds the threshold.

Sounds like you have settings wrong. Check for presets on the plugin as you want straight gating(with the sidechain triggering the threshold). Might be worth a look at youtube for some basics on gates

I watched the same four or five videos on there, but I'm not really seeing a straight gating feature on the Expander/Gate Dyn 3. I'm pretty sure that volume will always be reflected by the input's volume.

I'd like to see what kind of flavor i could create with just a straight gate though, if one does exist. I know I could very easily use volume automation to turn the track on or off, but I think triggering a gate to open with a wobble track could be much more flavorful.

Okay, after reading again, I think you are using the wrong plugin. If you want the sidechain signal to turn DOWN the audio of the track with the plugin, you should use the compressor plugin with the sidechain feed. With the gate plugin, the sidechain is causing the track to turn ON and you want it to turn OFF(or down). That is indeed called ducking and I do that with the compressor plugin. I use it for a talkback mic in the studio. The musicians to talk and be heard in all the headphone mixes, but as soon as the drummer starts playing, the compressor kicks in and lowers the mic by 20db so the leakage is not heard by everyone.

Someone on a different forum told me that this plugin is an expander and therefore that is what I am doing. A simple gate would mute/enable the volume, not cut/raise in scale to input.
