How to make the project tempo matching the midi performance?

I would like to record a piano midi track without the constriction of the click, so to be free of fully expressing my interpretation. So I would record it freely but, afterwards, I would like to make the project tempo matching the performance. How can I do? Is this possible? With beat detective?

I have found that the easiest way to do that is, once you have recorded your performance, export the midi. Then import it back with the include key etc. option.

That will map it for you.

Or, use Melodyne and export a tempo map and import that into Pro Tools.

Yeah sorry for the confusion, PT can’t. I was thinking of imported midi from other sequencers.

Use Melodyne.

Logic will do this stuff easily. So worth it to have around for $200. Much cheaper than Melodyne, too. And I own and love Melodyne!

In the absence of Melodyne (I assume the light version that comes with PT won't suffice) or Logic, the best way would be to go through your piano performance beat by beat, copying one note that lands on each beat to a new track. Where there are beats that have no note played on them, add a note to the new track manually. Then use Beat Detective to construct a MIDI map. Just be sure to change your original track to Sample based before you do anything else. Not Tick based, or it will mess it up.

This comes up all the time, and there's probably a zillion YT vids about how to do it (though no idea if any of them are any good). Sort of depends on how much "granularity" you need, but Steve is right that Logic's tools are better for this. If I wanted to do it in Pro Tools, and Melodyne didn't get me there, I think I'd go through and mark out 8 bar chunks just using "Identify Beat" which would be fast and easy. Once that's done I think I'd see if Beat detective could get me to the Bar level by letting it chew on each 8-bar chunk. If BD can't get it then you'd have to just use more Identify Beat commands to get it to the level of precision you're after. And as David points out, be sure your tracks are in Sample mode (not ticks) before you do this.
