Alesis SR-16 midi problem
Looking for some help introducing an SR-16 drum machine to PR21 on Windows 10. All running fine generally.
I can get a l/r signal from the main left and and main right, but the tempo is out of sync with the PT tempo, despite both being set to 87bmp. I am assuming using MIDI will fix this, and I want to let PT set the tempo as I have several songs recorded to which I wish to add the SR16 tracks. I have connected the midi out to midi in and vice versa but that's about as far as my knowledge goes so any help, in a very basic form, would be greatly appreciated. Assume I know nothing about Midi and you won' be too wrong. Thanks in advance. P.S. I have searched on here, and google/youtube but not found anything that has helped. |

Re: Alesis SR-16 midi problem
Wow, that's a very old unit. I used to use one with Studio Vision back in the mid 1990s.
I believe it responds to MIDI clock. In PT, Setup/MIDI/MIDI Beat Clock. Make sure it's turned on for the SR16. You may need to create it as a device in MIDI Studio first. Then make sure the SR16 is set to respond to MIDI Beat Clock. I don't remember how to do that - it's been nearly 3 decades since I used one.

Re: Alesis SR-16 midi problem
Things to consider:
1-what is the purpose of using the SR-16? 2-send MIDI back to the Alesis and slave it to PT, which should lock them together(you'll need to dig into the SR-16 manual to figure this out). Alternately, it might also be possible to have PT follow the SR-16's MTC(Midi Time Clock) but I've never tried it(I did get my Motif to follow PT so the arpeggiated sound locked to the session tempo). 3-If you just want to record drums from the Alesis, mute your click track>record the Alesis>nudge the printed audio to the grid(unmute the click and fine-tune the timing). More ideas: Record the midi from the Alesis(skip the audio) and use the midi to trigger a modern drum VI plugin like EZDrummer, Addictive Drums, etc. The sounds will(should) be much better than the old drum machine.

Re: Alesis SR-16 midi problem
Another workflow would be to forget the SR16's internal patterns, and use it as a drum sound module. Record the notes onto a MIDI track in PT.
