Default New article on PT11 metering

A little more info than we had before, along with the most close-up picture of the new meters that we've seen so far:

Anyone know what the four meters in non-HD PT11 are?

From my understanding, all extra metering is HD only, Native users would only get the metering already present in Pro Tools 10

guatamas - that was what we had been led to believe previously but the blog post contradicts this:

"Now, in Pro Tools 11, you have a choice of precision metering – 17 different scales in 11HD, and 4 in non-HD 11."

Are we safe assuming blog text is inherently accurate? It would be nice to think so.

I wonder whether the metering ballastics are hard wired? It would seem oddly archaic coding if so.

Avid would more likely have defined the set of parameters needed to properly describe all possible aspects of metering ballastic properties generically.

Having done that, the current list of metering types is simply a list of presets, each having a set of defined values for each parameter.

This methodology would allow more metering options can be easily added later, once their ballistics have been properly measured.

Nigel - I was under the impression that this is an official Avid blog ... in which case (and in the circumstances specifically regarding the proposed feature differences between the HD and non-HD products), they would be crazy to let out that sort of detail unchecked, don't you think?! And it is quite specific by fixing the number of 'vanilla meters' (now there's a new term!) at four?!

That would be my thinking too ;-)

Maybe vanilla meters will be lighter in colour too?

The ballistics of PT's meters has always been weird. The release is WAY to fast for example. This is fixed in 11.

I really like the look of these new meters. The ability to set different meters for masters is something which I'll find very useful for post production mixes where I currently have to use a PPM metering plug-in on the master. I know that a lot of people prefer to use proper hardware PPM meters for broadcast work where accurate metering is essential. Personally, I've found the PPM meters in the Phasescope plug-in to be good, and none of my mixes have been knocked back so far.

I'd be interested to know the thoughts of people working in post regarding the use of software based PPM metering vs the hardware equivalent.
