Missing Ableton Rewire Plugin After updating to PT 2021.3

Hi everyone!

Since I've updated to PT 2021.3 I no more have the Ableton plugin in the plugins insert list...in order to use the Rewire with Ableton Live 11.

I've trashed the preferences and now PT crashes every time it checks the plugin-list at the boot....randomly. So i had to remove manually all the plugins.

Then I've uninstalled and reinstalled PT with no plugins in the folder, I've created a session but still no way to see the Ableton Live plugin in the list while putting an insert. I've also tried to uninstall and reinstall Ableton Live 11 launching it in standalone.

And PT still crashes if I re-copy all my plugins in the plugins folder. Now I'm trying to manually remove every plugins that seems to be related to the crash. But I can't understand why I can't see Ableton Live as an insert...

Anyone that fixed this problem...? tks

ReWire has been deprecated for a while now.

Unsure if it gets removed when installing new versions. What version did you upgrade from?

I’ve updated to 2021.3 from the previous release, I suppose it was 2021.2.

The Ableton Link function is still active...doesn’t make sense to remove the rewire.

Ableton Link and Propellerhead ReWire are entirely different in how they work. They’re also made from different companies.

Prior version was 2020.12. I can check when back in the studio if it still exists on my system.

What OS are you running?

Ableton disabled Rewire in the current version of Live (11), cause Reason Studios stopped the development of Rewiew in 2020.

But you can re enable it in Live.


Find the "options.txt" file in the preferences of the current version of Live.
If there is none, create a txt file with the name.
How to find it...

Open it it with an text editor and add the line.


-EnableReWire


Save it and Rewire should work again...
I am not sure, if Protools killed the support of rewire...But if you made the above steps and rewire is still missing in Protools, then Avid has removed the rewire support in 2021.3...

Just checked.

PT 2020.11 and ReWire for both Live and Reason appear in my instrument list.

I have Live 10 not 11, so if you have the latter, might be worth investigating what the poster above wrote.

I had this before on an older PT version. Trashing the InstalledAAXPlugIns file and forcing a rescan helped.

Writing has been on the wall for ReWire for so long already. Once they released AAX-native Reason rack plugin, it meant ReWire is dead.

I didn't find the options.txt file in Ableton Prefs so I should create one but if they abandoned the rewire protocol I don't think its a good idea to set-up each protools session in this way for the future.

I've also asked to Avid support if they also deleted the Rewire support on this 2021.3 release. I'll write here about their feedback.
