all those on a g4 , 001 and panther
Hi Guys
Just wondering about the feel of pt and panther on a g4 I have always felt 10.2 and pt felt slow, sloppy and not as snappy as 0s9 and was hoping that 10.3 changed that and had the feel of os9. I know this is early days but would love to move to os 10.3. By the way Those who have , did you do a clean install??? If not whats the best way to get 10.3 on my system while mantaining my current set up Cheers all Laswell |

Re: all those on a g4 , 001 and panther
Panther is overall very fast compared to Jaguar. Consequently, most apps feel faster too.
so much plays into this though....my G4 450 is maxed out on RAM and I don't have a lot of toys and other crap running on my system. You video card and it's capabilities will also play into it. If you have the stock standard card, depending on what it is...you will still have refresh rate issues if you had them before. I just loaded 6.2.2 this morning and started off by recording some stereo tracks. No issues so far except that all my preferences had been reset. I just wish i could use my Presonus FireStation with Pro Tools LE on my G5 at home. Then I'd be set.

Re: all those on a g4 , 001 and panther
I just wanna understand that well:
From digi compatibility 6.2.2 page: "Qualified CPUs — With Mac OS X 10.3.1 Only Power Mac G5 1.6 GHz single processor, 1.8 GHz single processor*, and 2.0 GHz dual processor models iMac G4 ('03) PowerBook G4 ('03) iBook G4 Currently shipping Power Mac G4 (may require upgrade to OS X 10.3/10.3.1) " What are currently shipping Power Mac? Is that the "firewire 800" models? I wish they can be more precisily on this information, And not something like "currently shipping Power Mac", this is a Lack of information.... Anyone?

What kind of budget do you have? On the low-end, you can salvage your existing investment and could go with processor upgrade (1.4Ghz+ -- Giga Designs, PowerLogix (Dual), or Sonnet) and a bunch of RAM (you definitely need more of that). Or, are you looking to get a whole new system? I just ordered a Giga Designs 1.25Ghz (works up to 1.467) and upgraded my video card to a ATI Radeon 9000 Pro for a total of $550. I already have 1Gb of RAM (which I would recommend as a minimum). I expect to be able to get at least a couple more years out of this setup. All in all, it really depends on what you do-- I usually don't have the need for more than 12-15 audio tracks, a few MIDI tracks, maybe some ReWire w/Live, and generally run pretty light on the plugins. --- c

Re: all those on a g4 , 001 and panther
Yeah, i'd like to keep my system and spend as little as possible!!!
I'm not really pushing the set up I have now, I 've never used over 15 tracks myself and don't use many plug-ins at the moment (can't afford them!). I've just been looking at upgrading the processors and think thats the way forward. If I get 1.25 Ghz will that add on to my 466? or will it replace it? I was thinking of picking up a copy of Jaguar, but the general consesus seems to be that panther is where its at. So basically i should be looking at upgrading to PTLE 6.2.2, Panther, another 500mb and 1.25 GHz. I've read that PTLE 6.2.2 comes with reason Adapted which is cool as I was looking to buy that. So, thats more dollars to pay out! i've just bought a pair of yamaha ns10s – alls I gotta do now is write some hits!!!! Thanks for your advice, I've just been reading so many different things its hard to work whats best! B |

After using it for the past few weeks, I'd say Panther is definitely the only way to go (if you're using or planning on using X) and the 6.2.2 upgrade seems pretty solid as well. --- c

i was a bit concerned about the graphics card issue til I found this on the ATI site (posted last week). Hopefully, that will take care of any Panther incompatibilities (as they claim). --- c
