Urgent PT8 LE installation problem. Help!
ok so im fairly new to all this and I've bought myself this new windows 7 laptop, (yes I realise that a windows laptop is not the way to go but its what i could afford financially)
The laptop was brand new, worked fine. I installed PT8 LE using the mbox2 mini as my interface and installation was fine. I loaded up a new pro tools session on an external usb hard drive (unfortunatley im not sure what its rpm is) and hit play. I then recieve the error 'problem with audio clock' etc etc Seeing as it didnt work, I tried to exit PT and as I did the 'blue screen' appeared for about 5 seconds and says something like 'memory dump error' or something, and my computer would restart itself. Then whenever I logged on again my laptop would crash, and I would recieve the same blue screen and it would restart again. Thats assuming it would actually log on, sometimes it would just stay on the 'werlcome screen' with the cursor just spinning (loading). Luckily I could launch my laptop in safe mode and restore it to before pro tools was installed, and then it works fine again. I then try to install pro tools again, and the same happens, its an infinite loop of frustration! I have tried everything from uninstalling any anti virus, installing the whole progamme onto an external usb drive, turning of wifi, reinstalling, repairing. This laptop means nothing to me without pro tools trying to run on it, I bought it purposely for it! If any body could give me any more suggestions on how to resolve this issue, or could recommend specific system specifications required for pt8 to run succesfully, it would be greatly appreciated as I may return this laptop for a tower instead. I'm so frustrated! And please dont suggest macs because I can simply not afford :) Thank you Sandra report below. Re: Urgent PT8 LE installation problem. Help!
Yep, welcome to life with an Mbox 2. It's gonna be a bumpy ride. Using the Mbox 2 with Windows 7 is just not a good experience. And now that they've been retired in favor of the new Mbox generation, it's probably not going to get any better.
What I ended up doing was kill two birds with one stone - I'm moving to Pro Tools 9 and a new interface, and it seemed that the most inexpensive way to go about it is to actually just buy a Fast Track Pro with MP9. I ordered from Sweetwater yesterday. I mean, sure, you can just crossgrade to PT9 for $250, but then you can't buy an interface that nice for just $100. Then I'm going to experiment. I think I can run S/PDIF out of the Mbox2 and into the FT Pro, and have a total of 4 mic preamps, bypassing the crummy Digi drivers. |

Re: Urgent PT8 LE installation problem. Help!
Fast Track Pro is a very decent interface. I've been using one for three years. It has S/PDIF. And with other DAWs it supports the M-Audio ASIO Driver. I wonder if PT MP9 does as well? It should, because ASIO4ALL sucks in comparison. I think it's a great little interface for a home studio where you're just recording yourself or people one at a time. Typicaly I run vocals through the front (via a Presonus Studio Channel) and my POD HD via S/PDIF which gives me 4 inputs and it's fine. You are limited to the 44.1 kHz Nyquist Freq when you run both with this interface, but you can still record 24 bit and that's more important.
Remember this regarding drivers -- if it ain't broke, don't fix it. You'll always get prompted to update your drivers to the latest ones when PT has an update. Not necessarily a good idea. Try the old ones first, and if they work you're golden. If they don't work, then update. Also I would pick up a 9 volt adapter and power the interface that way instead of using USB power. Why? I can just say I've had no clicks or pops since I went over to that. Or if you must use USB power, add a USB card to your PC if you've got a ton of crap running off your USB like I do (HD, MIDI Keyboard, Faderport, Lexicon MX300, Fast Track Pro, you get the picture).
