Default Using Carbon Adat with Hosa odl-312

Hello everyone 😀 new member here.

Here is my setup:

Mac Pro 2019/Ventura 13.7.5

Pro Tools Ultimate v 2024.10

Avid Carbon with latest firmware

Fractal Audio Axe FX 2 XL

I am trying to use the Carbon adat ports to connect to my Fractal Audio Axe FX 2 AES ports in the following way:

1. Axe FX AES out to Carbon adat port 1 in

2. Carbon adat port 1 out Axe FX AES in

(I have port one of the Carbon set to SPDIF in the Pro Tools Hardware dialog box)

I am trying to set this all up for 2 reasons:

* To record the processed sound of the Axe FX 2 on one track while simultaneously recording the clean DI on a separate track

* To Reamp the DI guitar track back through the Axe FX 2

Here is the problem. I cannot get a signal from the Carbon Adat out going into the Axe FX AES in. I have tried several cheaper converters but none of them have worked. I get no input signal from the Axe FX. I

I have heard that the Hosa ODL-312 SPDIF Optical to AES/EBU converter might be the solution to this problem. However, I wanted to check with this forum before I purchase the unit.

It might be worth mentioning that the Axe FX has both AES and Spdif ins and outs, so if anyone knows of a way to use the SPDIF connections to the Carbon Adat ports.
I was able to do this previously using the Avid Omni however the Omni had dedicated SPDIF ins and outs that did not require any outside converters.

Thank You all for your help. 👍😀

Hi,

Just an idea as I don't have a Fractal unit, but do have a Fender Tonemaster Pro. I took a quick look at the Fractal manual and it does have a 2 way USB port for audio and MIDI. Note that it only works at 48K, but that's also true for the Fractal's connections via SPDIF and AES. There is a way (I believe within the I/O settings in ProTools) to set up your Fractal as an insert if it's connected via USB. The link below shows a guy explaining this with a Tonemaster Pro and I would think his procedure would also work with any device connected via USB. I'm not sure if the USB connection will accomplish what you'd like to be able to do, but thought it was worth a shot. I also have a Carbon, but you might not even need it in this case. Hope that helps.

The HOSA box works. I haven't used it with a Carbon or your Fractal but it's been a reliable converter. Not the cheapest thing but if that doesn't work it's probably something with the setup.

Hey I just checked with the Carbon product dude and he states you are on the right track...

Your Fractal guitar thingy does not have the same digital IO that Carbon does... so you need to find a converter. The Fractal has copper AES (XLR) and copper SPDIF (RCA) while Carbon has Optical ADAT/SPDIF

At least as far as he could tell from the Fractal user guide.

Hope that helps.

Thank You for that information Marianna :) This might be an ongoing quest. In the meantime, I have the Fractal hooked up using the analog ins and outs.
