Default Playlist/comping workflow confusion

I'm practicing using playlists to comp in my first vocalist recording session and am confused by the contradictions in the information I find. I see that people will record the initial take, then manually create each new playlist. These playlists will be automatically numbered when the naming window comes up. But I also noticed, while practicing, that if I simply record over a take, Pro Tools automatically creates a new playlist with a new number. I can see recording the initial take and, to preserve separately, creating a new playlist with a new name that would indicate these are playlists based on the main take, but after that, I don't see the need to constantly take the extra step to manually create new playlists from the same take unless, for some reason, I want to rename a whole new group of playlists. Does this make sense?
I'm curious what efficient workflows users here employ?
Looking forward to the feedback!

Your method matches mine, in that I don't rely on auto anything. When I want another take, I click on new Playlist and follow the naming scheme. Often times I'll change the name to reflect the date, arrangement, whatever.

Come comp time, I've never had nary a hiccup, but will add I've never used Playlist for anything other than actual audio, be it single tracks or groups/busses

That is not correct. Pro tools does not automatically create a new playlist. Im not sure what you meant by that.
Unless you are "loop recording". there is an option for that.
