Default Stability

I have one simple question: What is the BEST PC to use with the digi 001? How much will the "best" one cost? I don't really want to go to the mac side if I don't have to... I'd rather get another PC and network it with my existing PC. Thanks - Jon

the "best" one will cost you a lot less than a mac, that's for sure. buying a computer for your studio isn't like buying a carburator for your hot rod - you don't just get a choice of the stock one and a couple of aftermarket models. with computers you're talking about buying several different components designed to a) work with your studio and b) work with each other.

if you don't have experience building computers (which it sounds like you don't), you should probably consult with a couple of DAW builders. you can find plenty here on the DUC and they're not that much more expensive than doing it yourself. they're also (supposedly) guaranteed to work....

and they're still cheaper than macs....

i would also have to frown upon the networking thing... it may work for you, but it may cause undue stability problems as well...

So I should contact a custom builder? Can you let me know how to contact someone who will give me a "guaranteed not to crash - digi 001 ready" system? Also, how much will this cost me (for just the tower?) Thanks!

There are several good DAW builders who specialize in 001 systems.
www.audiocomputing.com www.dawbox.com www.soundchaser.com www.wavedigital.com

or you can check out this article on www.prorec.com about building your own. they give complete instructions.

I got a quote from a close-by computer builder, how does this sound?

Processor : Pentium® 4 Processor at 1.4GHz
Memory : 256MB PC133 SDRAM
Hard Drive : 40GB 7200rpm UDMA100
Multimedia Drive : CD-ROM at 52x
Second Multimedia Drive : CD-R at 24x (CD-RW at 10x, and CD-ROM at 40x)
Video Card : ATI Radeon 32MB DDR w/ TV-Out
Sound Card : Integrated Intel AC'97
Network Card : 10/100 Ethernet
Mouse : Logitech Optical Wheel Mouse
Operating System : Windows 98se
Warranty : 2 Year Limited Parts + 2 Year Labor + 2 Year Phone
Support

Total: $936.00

I guess if I went with this I'd have to pull the digi 001 card out of my HP and re-install the software but that shoulden't be too much trouble. Can anyone tell me if this system sounds like a good digi host, and if not, what should I upgrade? Thanks - Jon

Jon,
I'll make a couple of comments.

1) Two hard drives - one for Windows and one for audio. Make sure your builder sets them both up as IDE masters.

2) You have no way to do backups. Consider a DVD-RAM drive instead of two multimedia CDs as you show right now. The new HP DVD-RAM drive runs about $500.

You did say you wanted the 'best'. ;-)

Mark - thanks for the input! I already have a western digital 60 gig as a backup in my current machine, and they said they could install that for free if they built me a computer. Sorry, I neglected to include that in my original post. What does the DVD-RAM drive do? Thanks - Jon
