SMPTE and midi interface

hello - i am a pro tools le 002 rack user. i recently upgraded to 7.3.1 and i realize i need a midi interface. i am confused about whether i need one with smpte and mtc capibilities or just a standard midi patchbay. i have done some film scores in the past - but i always just sent audio files to the video editor - whom i assume took care of the synchronization issues. is there a reason i would want an interface with smpte or mtc. if so what are the advantages to having that. also if i am a pro tools le user (without dv toolkit) can i still utilize smpte. what midi interfaces would you users recommend. thank you -jim

The only instance I can think of for using an interface with SMPTE is if you need to synchronize to an external device, like a video deck. I used to go thru this everytime I did audio for video, but since they gave us the option of importing Quicktime video, haven't used those (expensive, dang it...) video decks at all. Now the video houses send me .mov files instead of tape.
As an aside, I still have my DA88's and have TONS of stuff on them that need to be transferred (24 tracks worth) and will still use my old MOTU Micro USB to get everything to lock up. And you never know, someone might want to track to DA88's and then edit in Pro Tools...
