Extract Swing % from MIDI Clip
My friend has sent me a MIDI Clip of a drum beat that I'd like to extract the swing % from (rather than create a groove template).
Is it possible to do this some how? So far I've imported the MIDI clip into PT 11 and am trying to find a way to analyse the swing %. I just want to apply that swing % to another beat.

Re: Extract Swing % from MIDI Clip
while you are waiting for a proper answer .. and no one seems to want to be the 1st to reply ... so .. when you zoom into the notes, in the edit window or the Midi Editor window, are you seeing the notes 1) Right on the Grid, 2) all the same distance from the grid, 3) or are they all at different distances from the grid ???
i ask this because: if the answer is 1) then we all know the groove is NOT part of the grid (more velocity driven) 2) this might be able to be analyzed by beat detective or just some quick experimentation with a Dummy Midi track next to the original for comparison 3) probably no way but using a bit of #2 answer and average it out ... or none of this will apply to your situation and you can just disregard all of it .. cheers john

Re: Extract Swing % from MIDI Clip
Some notes are off the grid, I tried using Beat Detective and setting it to 'MIDI' then 'Captured Selection' with the clip selected. Analysed and saved as a MIDI Groove Template. It seems to have worked out OK...
I was just wondering if there is a way to detect 'Swing %' somehow? It would've been nice to just use MIDI Real-Time properties on the target track if I knew the swing percentage from the clip my friend sent me. I guess it wouldn't make much sense for organic drum patterns though, as not every note will have the same 'swing' factor I guess... I suspect Groove Template is the only way to go with this.

Re: Extract Swing % from MIDI Clip
There are two parameters to swing. First there is the amount of swing (a percentage). But then there is the level at which the swing is applied: quarter note, eight note, sixteenth note, etc.
You would need to discern both of these from the performance track. Swing pushes the even numbered note in a group towards a triplet. But the group can be quarter notes, eighth notes, etc. I like to use Strike because Strike lets you control these two parameters separately. So you can lay down a simple square groove, then adjust both parameters to find the right feel of the original performance.
