Default Drum plugin for triggering?

Hi,

Last summer i recorded a metal band and during the mix, i re-trigered all the Kick, snare and toms to get a more "machine sound". Usualy i just add a layer (on metal projects) to add more punch to the drums. But this band wanted a really distinct sound and we reach our goal this way.

They will enter studio soon for an album project and this time, the drummer wanted to track with a roland v-drum and dub the cymbals later after editing the parts.
My question is, can i load MY samples in a plugin like DFH superior drummer and have access to at least 4 velocity "zones" like in TL drum rehab for the snares and the toms and "play" with the midi in the same way i do with the markers in Rehab to assign a hit to a certain layer?

Does anyone here ever tried this method?

It's either this or track the acoustic drum without the cymbals, beat detective the tracks, retrig with TL drum rehab and track the cymbals later.
I think i'll go with method 2 but i would like to have feedback from someone who tried with an electronic drum.

Thanks!

Luc

BFD2 allows you to Import your own stereo samples.

Masseys DTM is free if you own any one of his other plugs and is a great tool for a scenario like this. Then you could just load your samples into structure and have all the velocity control you want.

Hi Guitar 486, yes, i own massey plugs. So i will look at DTM but i wonder how well it works with structure, do you use this method?

Thanks

I don't do a lot of drum replacing, however I have used that method to replace just a snare drum. The workflow would be the same for a whole kit and I found it to be easier than using beat detective. DTM is a very simple plugin that simply finds transients and maps them to midi notes. Haven't used it in a while but i believe it will map velocities fairly accurately too. Then all you have to do is move the midi notes to whatever your structure sample is on for that drum and repeat.

He's not looking to do sound replacing - he's going to record MIDI played on a V-Drum Kit. BFD2 and Superior 2.0 have the best V-Drum support. BFD2 of those 2 is the only which allows the user to Import their own stereo drum samples. No reason to use DTM since he's already recording MIDI.

Yes Rail, exactly, i am going midi. But as i said, the other option would be to track the acoustic drums and then re-trigger. But it's a long process with Rehab and if from what i understand of BF2, it seems verry powerfull and i will surely save a great amount of time going that way.

The only question now is does the Vdrums respond verry well (tracking).
I remember doing a live session with a progressive band and the drummer had a vdrum kit, there where occasional flams.

But i know his kit where not carefuly tweaked and it's not a big problem when tracking midi!
Did you ever track midi with a Vdrum Rail?
I just wonder if the drummer will be cool with this drumset.

Thanks again

Luc

Yes, I have recorded MIDI Grooves with a V-Drum kit... you generally will get some cross-talk between pads and have to do some clean-up work.. but it's usually pretty minor if the kit was set up well and the pads were mounted on real drum hardware to minimize inter-pad vibrations.

We currently use a Yamaha DTXTREMEIII Special kit.

You could still use Structure for you samples in this application.
