Default PT Loses Audio Device on Reboot?

Murphy's Law strikes again.

This is new today after running PT about 15 other days for various periods of time.

Boot O/S, boot PT ... everything works.
Close PT, O/S still up.
Reboot PT, no system changes. No sound. PT shows channel audio activity and Master Bus activity. Output to RME Totalmix shows no audio activity.
Double check I/O and Playback engine settings. Shows proper device ... DSP Hammerfall ... and proper default I/O.

Check other media players, sound and activity in Totalmix channels.
Conclusion, not problems with system and/ or audio device.

Close PT, Close O/S.
Boot O/S, boot PT ... everything works, again.
Close PT, O/S still up.
Reboot PT, redux. No sound.
Change Playback engine to windows generic (sound) and back to DSP Hammerfall ... sound is back.

Conclusion (after several replications), on close PT is losing communication ability with audio device/ playback engine ... even though it says/ shows everything as properly selected and routed.

Conclusion, I've got a problem and need help.

I haven't used PT on a PC for a minute, so I hope this helps....

Is the asio4all driver installed? If so, try disabling it.

Also try adding the RME to the PTaggregate and see if that sticks.

Have you deleted prefs?..that's another place to visit

I see you have posted in a few places and I feel your pain. The thing is, while your system appears to be plenty potent, it is un-proven for Pro Tools and may be the issue. Sadly, PT is a finicky program that plays nicely with far fewer systems, as compared with other DAW programs. If having PT is really important for you, it might be time for a newer-more compatible PC? The i7 socket 2011 and x79 motherboards are the hot setup at this point. Can I promise that will solve your problems? Not really, but can I promise your current system is fine for PT? Not really

Something that looks troublesome on your system description: I see 4 drives, all showing SCSI(???), and a "boatload" of partitions. I don't think that is helping

Something that might be worth a try; set Windows to output audio thru the motherboard's audio out and leave the RME device for Pro Tools only.

What did you change the sound back from to Hammerfall?
If it was the MB soundchip I would disable it.
Is Hammerfall the default windows audio device?
Also, it looks like the drives are encrypted?

Thanks for your comments ... much to digest. The partitions are to optimize disc usage and keep all critical activity, i.e., recording, sample streaming, etc., on the outer rim of the platters, with less accessed data and storage on the slower reading/ writing parts closer to the axis.

The C drive is a 15,000 RPM SCSI drive ... but that is the only implemented SCSI. So, when running I'm only using (at the time this happened) two drives, both primary partitions.

I'll start searching system compatibility issues. I can say that install was a nightmare and until I let windows set compatibility mode ... I couldn't even boot PT reliably. But then for a couple of weeks everything appeared to work as written on the tin.

I also hang on close with a message regarding the AIR REX player.

I don't mind sorting things out ... I just hate digging if there is a simple and known issue. Which is why I've asked.

Thanks again.

I may have 'concluded' too soon. I replicated again and this time changing the audio device and changing it back did not work and loading both 64 bit and 32 bit standalone synths, Halion Sonic, failed to create sound (saw audio in the GUI of the synth) but no sound. Yet system sounds were still being played through the RME Digiface?

When I flipped the audio devices, once I used ASIO4All and once I used the Windows generic Duplex ASIO drivers ... the times when it worked.

First thing I'm going to nuke the ASIO4All. I only installed it on a whim to see whether I could use it to aggregate in PT ... I don't really need it.

Then I updated my RME drivers.

Finally, onboard chip is disabled.

Back to the whacky world of 'I wonder what's gonna happen next.'

Thanks.
