There's a bug in 2021.3.1/2021.3 where if you have a 32bit file in a 24bit session (whether you change the session bit depth from Session Setup or you import a 32bit file into a 24 bit session) and you consolidate, you'll get full peak distortion. I've reported it to Avid.

Not really - just because the mp3s aren't at full scale doesn't prove the original files on the track aren't - as you've both suggested the track could have gone through a master fader or some other sort of attenuation before exporting. As Rich says we need to see the session really, but from the info we have it suggests it's simply a problem between the 32Bit - >24 Bit conversion.

Edit : also just to say it took me about 30 seconds to be able to replicate this problem. (Turn the clip up beyond 0dBFS, still sounds fine on playback; consolidate, sounds awful)

Wow - hadn't seen that - good to know. Wonder if this is the OP's problem?

Where's Darryl when you need him? He's like an encyclopedia of these things.
Did someone upset him, or did he get Covid? Seems a shame that he suddenly went silent.

Don't know what other info you'd be seeking - until the OP either posts the actual session, or the files, or gives more information it's impossible to know, but BScout's post seems the likely explanation right now.

Hi there,

Did you ever get to the bottom of this?

I’ve run into the same issue. I work in audio post, I consolidate clips all the time and for some reason now when I do this, it clips the audio.

I’m having the same problem with audio suite plugins. For example I have a perfectly fine (not clipped or peaking) bit of dialogue that has a small mouth click. So I use RX de mouth click on 2 or so words and when I render it, those 2 or so words are completely clipped and distorting.

I think the answer is "You've pushed the file over 0dBFS. When you play this back through the 32 bit floating point mixer, it has enough headroom to cope, when you consolidate the clip to a 24Bit file, it doesn't.". The fix is either to lower clip gain (perhaps a lot) before consolidating or just commit the track which consolidates everything perhaps using a different process that doesn't do the conversion to a 24Bit. Not sure about that though.
