Default Best Surround controller for 5.1

Hi !

I'm taking the plunge into 5.1 mixing for a new project (Music & Sfx's)....plouf !
My dilemna is choosing the right surround controller for my system (Procontrol)....
I've heard about the Audient 510 and the StudioTech model 68A/69A but I've got 2 days left to decide....

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">hi there!
i have just ordered a TASCAM DS-M7.1. i was thinking quite a lot about it, and for me it's the best solution.
- it's cheap
- it has the ADAT input, so i can connect it directly to ADAT BRIDGE
- doesn't have many inputs - i do not need them. don't use stem recorder, just need my protools sources (on ADAT) and anything else on analog input.

and you finally don't have to use procontrol's CR section...

check it out, i think it's worth.

Why not just use the ProControl monitor section?

HI !

Thanks again for your replies...Does anyone work with MultiMax EX controller.
I've heard they're great but sometimes "noisy" and hard to set-up
And...Oh Jules ! ...ProControl may be great for mixing but lack of some important features when it comes to multichannel monitoring (like a user selectable Dim Level, Ref button, downmixing...)

ODC, here's a topic about TASCAM controller:

http://duc.digidesign.com/cgi-bin/ub...c;f=6;t=000824

it's the most simple unit, but the cheapest one. if you don't need the extra inputs it might be good.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">for monitoring surround mixes it is necessary to have downmixing (5.1->stereo, 5.1->mono) and bass management.
you could use tweetie/woofie plugins for that purpose, but:
- you have to remember to put it on master fader in every session
- it eats your dsp
- hardware is hardware

hardware monitor controller can be exactly calibrated, with big lcd dB SPL display - not important when mixing music, but film, or dvd must be mixed in exactly specified (by dolby for example) monitoring level.

As far as the dowmixing issues, check out Waves 360, it probably does what you want...
but it does not do the calibration of the room for you
