help with purchasing new hard drive
i need help please. i am currently running a g4 733 w/pt le and have two hardrives installed.. 1 is an ibm deskstar 40 gig 7200 rpm drive and the other is a maxtor 10 gig 5400 rpm drive.. i want to make the upgrade to a better harddrive which way should i go??? shoould i get a scsi card and buy a scsi drive that goes to like 10000 rpm's or buy another deskstar or seagate 7200 ata hard drive??
i have heard for pt to run more stable its recommended to use a scsi drive...anyone using one can give me some insight on how to proceed.. i am going to compu.s.a. in a little while so would appreciate some feedback.. i realize i would have to buy a scsi card also because i dont have a scsi port... thanks folks

Re: help with purchasing new hard drive
What about a firewire hard drive. You can get a 120 gb firewire hard drive for about $250. Make sure you get one that is 7200 rpm and has the oxford chipset. I use the acomodata fw and have had no problems. Do a search on the duc for firewire harddrives, many people have been using them with great success.

Re: help with purchasing new hard drive
first get rid of the 5400rpm drive and replace it with a 7200rpm, Deskstar, WD(the new 8mb cache ones are sweet!).
Next, 120 gb firewire hard drive for about $250? Forget that. For under $200 you can have a firewire dock with an 80mb carrier, and add on as many hot swappable drive carriers as you want for $15 plus the drive cost. (80bg drives today are around $100) So for $300 you can have a dock and 2-80gb carriers. More info at http://www.npstudios.com/fwdock.html Hope this is helpful. |

Re: help with purchasing new hard drive
Don't buy Maxtor! I had purchased a maxtor fw drive and had nothing but problems. I returned it, got another one, and the same thing happened. I called maxtor and they were no help.
Where02190, can you elaborate on that setup? Is there a thread explaining this setup? I see you fixed your web link. I'll check it out. |

Re: help with purchasing new hard drive
You buy the Zeehoo case, the one from the link on the FW dock page from our site listed above.
You get the mobile rack and inner trays from directron, or if you call you can also get them from Zeehoo. (They don't list them on their website) the rack is powered by the case. The inner rack goes into the case following the instructions on the FW dock site. You put any standard ATAIDE drive in the inner tray, whcih fits into the mobile rack. (All FW drives are this same procedure, a standard ATA/IDE drive in a FW enclosure.) Assembly takes 10-15 minutes, and is very simple and outlined step by step on the website. Fully assembled FW docks will soon be available from Zeehoo, or you can buy them from us. E-mail fro details and price. the dock runs on the Oxford 911 chipset, and is totally PT compatible provided you install a PT approved drive of 7200rpm or better. You can read and write(record) directly to it. It is hot swapable, meaning you can change drives without rebooting. It works on both Mac and PC platforms. Hope this is helpful. |
