Latency and soft synths.
Hi, I was wondering if anyone here could shed some light on this topic. I would like to get a few things from spectrasonics( stylus, etc.) but I am concerned about the latency. I use reason with the 001 and an oasys card and battery. I have to arrange my tracks in reason and then import to pro tools and then nudge the tracks to make it sound right. If I play the synht modules in reason and record midi in pro toolls the latency is so bad. The same thing goes for battery. I can't even use battery beacuse the latency is so bad. Is there any other solution? is it direct connect? Please help.

Re: Latency and soft synths.
I usually do my sequencing or use soft synths on another computer and sync it to protools. This improves the latency issues, and frees up processing for protools, but to be honest, mtc with 001 still isn't perfect. It is good enough to monitor this way, to get an idea of the mix. But when I'm settled on the mix, I still import the files to protools and nudge them into place.
What I do is record a snare hit in protools on my mac, while simultaneously recording the hit into cubase on my pc (about 10 seconds before the start of the tune). This way, when I export the files from the pc and import them to the mac (protools), I line up the snare hits, and everything is locked solid. |

Re: Latency and soft synths.
Thanks for an intelligent response.i am sure there are others who use soft synths with pro tools but they don't seem to read these posts anymore. Thanks again.

Re: Latency and soft synths.
The Spectrasonics synths are RTAS.
That gives you the lowest possible latency. DirectConnect has greater latency; depending upon of all other things your computers processor, etc. How is latency an issues when you import from Reason? You mean it's bad when you use it as a standalone? How are you using Battery without DirectConnect? Check out reFuse for Reason and ProTools. http://www.refusesoftware.com |

Re: Latency and soft synths.
There is a long review of reFuse in the latest TapeOp.

Re: Latency and soft synths.
Are you saying that you are using BATTERY with an ASIO driver for OASYS then light piping it in to PT?,,if i've got this right it seems awfuly converluted and your not getting all you can out of BATTERY,,,Use DIRECT-CONNECT and you get to use all 16 channels of audio and probebly a lot less latency than with the ASIO driver,,I seem to remember that some people were using this method to get sound from REASON into PT,,but i think they were only syncing the two apps together with MIDI clock,,i could be wrong,,do a search,,

Re: Latency and soft synths.
stylus has changed the way I work.
latency is still there, but it is managable. |

Re: Latency and soft synths.
No problem keysmia. Be patient, this forum is really good. I must also give kudos to the forum. I learned that little sync tip from a thread I read on this forum a couple of years ago and it has been invaluable to me. Good luck.

Re: Latency and soft synths.
actually I was using battery with direct connect and sequencing midi into pro tools. The latency is so bad I stopped using it. I had been using reason through sound manger and oms and linking controlling through pro tools. I use the oaysys by itself. Should I try refuse is that better. I have an 9600 with a g3 400mhz card but I am thinking of getting the 800mhz card from sonnet. What do you guys think is the best way to go?. thanks for any info.

Re: Latency and soft synths.
Theom,
I'm intersted in Sylus, but I haven't been able to check it out other than what's on their web site (no dealers have it installed). I want to build drum beats for rock, pop, blues and country music, but all the demos on the Spectrasonics website are very "vinyl" oriented (dance music styles). Can stylus do rock? Does it have editing capabilities so that I can create drum beats with acoustic drum samples? Any advice on using an alternative program (Battery, Kontakt, SampleTank) that would work better for me, with PTLE and my 001? thanks in advance, dave patterson / knobville Quote:
