Default first time pro tools user, does 8.0.3 update go first?

I'm trying to install protools on my macbook OS X 10.6.1.
I installed pro tools 8 from the DVD, it went fine but then it wouldn't launch, got stuck setting up peripherals.
I then ran the upgrade to 8.0.3 download which seemed to be going fine, but ended up failing. Did I do this in the wrong order, should I uninstall the whole thing and run the 8.0.3 download first?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

You performed the steps in the correct order. OS X v10.6.2 is the qualified version for Pro Tools v8.0.3. Perhaps updating the OS to v10.6.2 via the combo updater will help? You can download the combo updater from Apple's web site. Do not use Software Update in the Apple menu!

Actually, you should not install 8.0.0 on a Snow Leopard OS, since it is not compatible.

You should use the uninstaller application included with the Pro Tools 8.0.3 updater, then follow the instructions on the PTLE 8.0.3 for Mac update page, linked from here:
www.digidesign.com/download/pt803

Pro Tools LE 8.0.3 Update for Mac OS X

Under Installation Instructions, it will tell you how to use the PTLE 8.0.3 updater with your Pro Tools LE 8.0.3 DVD.

The updater uses some of the files on the original 8.0 disk during the 8.0.3 installation process, such as the creative content.

Thank you, I'll give it a shot. One more question, I just read on the "read me first" page that you shouldn't install pro tools to the mac's internal hard drive? It also says you need a firewire drive, but my laptop doesn't have any firewire ports. Just wondering if I got that right, because I haven't heard that anywhere else. Thanks so much!

Please read that again. I suspect it says to install Pro Tools on the system drive but CREATE/SAVE/RUN SESSIONS from a separate drive(most Pro Tool users install the software on the system drive). This separate drive(NOT a partition of the system drive) can be firewire(with an approved Oxford xhipset) on an approved firewire port(many laptops can use cards), eSATA(if you have a port) or another internal drive(there are converter cages to install another hard drive in place of the optical drive on may laptops). USB drives are not supported or recommended(while you might have temporary success with a USB drive, when things stop working, that will be the first thing to blame). The recording drive(where you create and save your sessions MUST be a 7200 rpm drive. Recording to the system drive may work "okay" for small sessions(2-8 tracks with no heavy VI's), but don't expect to run lots of tracks or instruments that way.
