Default HELP !!! OSX install errors.

I'm trying to install Panther on my second ATA drive. This drive currently has no OS on it.

OS9 is currently on my main ATA drive (bus 0 )

I've tried installing disk #1 about six times. Each time it runs for about 1/2 hr, then tell sme that there were installation errors. The disk itself is absolutely OK, and has 20 gig free.
It was formatted a year ago with the Apple OS9 utilities / HFS+

There are no scratches on the install disk. I am out of ideas.

Any suggestions? Any guesses?

Did you try to format the disc during the OSX install?

There should be a difference between OS9 HFS+ and OSX HFS+ cause in OSX the disc programm asks you if you want to install the OS9 driver when you wants to format a disc.

Good luck Wolfgang

When you are at the install page having booted from the CD, go to one of the menus and launch Disk Utility.

Format the drive as HFS+(Journaled), and check the OS9 driver box. If you are partitioning check this for each partition.

Journaled HFS+ drives recover more quickly after a crash, but DO NOT use this journaled option for audio drives.

Try reformatting using OSX cdrom disk utils. This sounds like the problem.

You all seem to agree. I was hoping to not have to re-format, since that requires a ton of back-ups, but I'll do this today and report back.

Thanks for all the good info.

Aaaaaaarrrgghhh......

OK, I backed-up my bus-0 drive, and formatted it HFS+ journalled with the OSX installer disk.

The Panther installer now sees the drive, but tells me that I can neither install software on this drive, nor restart using it. You gotta' be kidding me.

The OSX manual says some Macs will need a firmware upgrade, but I don't see one at apple, and my mca originally came with OSX installed, so why would it need new firmare?

What now?

Hi,
What model Mac are you running? Are these the disks that came with it?
Thanks,
