Default Can a Digi 888-16 clock be SLAVED to Apogee DA16X via BNC ?

I am running a PT Mix rig (5 cards) with 1 AD16X, 2 DA16X units, and 2 DA12 Apogees. To get the audio in and out of PT I am using 8 Digi 888-16 units with Y cables to connect to the Mix cards.

Since the 888-16s pass 24 bit audio via AES/EBU, that's why I chose them. But the Apogee DA12 units do not have a BNC connection, and they receive their clock signal from the AES which in this case is the inferior 888-16 clock.

My question is: can I slave the clocks of the two 888-16s to the C777 clocks in my Apogee DA16X units via BNC ?? I'm talking about the two 888-16s that are feeding the two DA12 units. Will it be a problem because they are 16 bit units and are receiving clock signals from a 24 bit unit ??

If I am to be stuck with the clock on the 888-16s then it defeats the whole purpose of having the Apogee DA12s in my opinion.

If anyone can answer this question I will be VERY GRATEFUL !!!

wild sync scenario !

I have traded my system for HD two years back so things are not very clar in my head, but from what I remember, selecting *digital* on inputs 1-2 in a 888 will slave it to the incoming clock on the AES-input 1-2 (AES/EBU is self-clocking like S/Pdif).

In that case the apogee A/D connected to your first 888 will be clock master.
The rest of the sync scenario is up to you, but may need some tweaking to work.

Important, use proper 110 Ohms cable for AES (not 75 Ohms coax !) to minimize jitter, and keep them short

OK Mark,

Thanks a MILLION !! So it seems you are saying that as long as I have my first 888 connected to my AD16X via AES ( set to "digital"), then I can slave the other seven 888 units to the first one via BNC cables, and then all of the 888 clocks will be slaved to the AD16X ?? Thus, my 2 Apogee DA12 units that can only receive their clock source from the AES inputs will be slaved to the AD16X clock as well ??

I think I understand, but am still not quite sure. Will the BNC from the last 888 unit need to have its output connected to the BNC input of the AD16X for proper termination ??

cant do it !!!
the first 888 would be clocked to the AES input from the Apogee
then since the 888 uses super-clock ( WCx256 ) to slave to, and not word-clock the remaining 888's get the super-clock from the unit in front of it. the apogee clock would not benefit the #2,3,4, etc... 888's in any way

you would need a apogee unit for every 888
or an aardvark WC-SC dist. amp to feed the 888's it would take the AES clock and distribute SC
