Default $600 to build a ProTools PC. Suggestions?

So if anyone's been reading my posts this weekend, Ive had some major computer issues. Rather then fixing my old system (P4 2.4Ghz, 1GB Ram, PT 6.4) Im considering building a new machine and upgrading to PT8.

Im on a TIGHT budget. My truck is broken too. My hours have been cut at work. wife lost her job. basically ive become the manifestation of some depressing country western song.

So there's a MicroCenter not too far from my house. Since everyone on here says to steer clear of store bought machines, can you guys suggest some components to build my own machine that will fit my budget?

Take my signature and see what you come up with. You don't need the Corsair Dominator specifically and there are cheaper options.

Mine was built for around $600 (no monitors) and I used the XP OS that was on my P4 after it crashed... I reused my P4 video monitors.

Here Chaotic,

I built this AMD dual core about a year ago. I'm not running PT on it - I use it as my onliner. But as your can see, it's obsolete and was really cheap -$411 without XP - and probably cheaper now. I do graphics on it and it screams. I copied my New Egg invoice for you. Order Total $411.51. Plus, I got $50 off on maill in rebates.

I built a core 2 duo two years ago and it ran me about $1400 all told with a quiet case and a couple extra fans. Actually this AMD is much quieter, so go figure.

So you know, It would be wise to be sure that compatibility is not an issue. I don't think there is a problem with anything on this list though for running PT. Maybe some minor adjusments.

Good Luck.

Dave

The system that I still have in my signature would be strong and stable, and by now comparatively inexpensive. Good luck.

What version of PT are you running on XP SP1? When you go to PT8, you will want SP3.

Building a PC is not hard if you can follow instructions and be patient.

PT LE 6.4

Can't I download the service packs?

I want to upgrade to PT 8, but being that Im broke now, I'd be happy running 6.4 a lil longer.

Yes you can download and update the service packs.

You should also run the latest Pace drivers.

Pro Tools 6.4 should have CS6 and CS9 installed.

So Ive spent the last bunch of hours on newegg, microcenter and whatnot and this is the system Ive come up with, let me know what you guys think.

ASUS P5Q Pro Turbo LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131377

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115037

Patriot Viper II 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820220426

ASUS EAH4650 Radeon HD 4650 512MB 64-bit DDR2 PCI Express http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121338

2 x Western Digital Caviar Blue 250GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache SATA Drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136113

Sony Optiarc Black 24X DVD/CD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827118030

SYBA SY-CRD20024 All-in-one USB 2.0 Card Reader http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820199025

So far this setup is $572 with tax and shipping. I realize I need a case and power supply. Any suggestions? How much wattage on the power supply do I need?

And are there any other components I need?
