under hard kick-ass rock category:
Urge Overkill - Saturation
Jesus Lizard - Goat

also, At The Drive-In - Relationship of Command, has some incredible full, 'agro' tracks, esp. the opening one.

oops, i re-read about obscure and not too new.
ok , The Stooges - Fun House
Metalica - Master Of Puppets (is not "Black" 90's material?)
Led Zep, Pink Floyd, and the Stones, obviously
David Bowie - Five Years (pos. the best overall)
Hendix - Axis:..
Lou Reed - Berlin (the suicide album)
Beatles - Abbey Road
(Pet Sounds of course)

Jonatha Brooke : 10 Cent Wings. Great performances, arrangements & a killer Bob Clearmountain mix. Highly recommended.

Good topic that could also be a good listing for auditioning monitors!

I'm a rock fan, so this list is definitely tainted by my tastes.

The White Album - The Beatles
Electric Ladyland - The Jimi Hendrix Experience
The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground
Uncle Meat - Frank Zappa
Ritual de lo Habitual - Jane's Addiction
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John
Animals - Pink Floyd
Physical Graffeti - Led Zepplin

Those are just a few off the top of me 'ead.

Fun one!

1) Toto - Mindfields (Eliot Schiener)
2) Jonatha Brooke - 10c Wings (Clearmountain)
3) Jude Cole - View From 3rd St. (Chris-Lord Alge)(I want to make drums sound that good!)
4) Sundays - Blind (Gavurin/Wheeler/Anderson)
5) Rush - Moving Pictures (Terry Brown/Paul Northfield)

I could think of a hundred more, but I'll spare you guys the space!

Do Make Say Think-
Goodbye Enemy Airship the Landlord is Dead

Wonderful indie band from Canada, they recorded the album in a barn on a farm outside Toronto, you can hear the crickets chirping ever so subtly in the distance.

The Flaming Lips = Soft Bulletin
Mr. Bungle = California
The Cars = Self Titiled
Lenny Kravitz = Are You Gonna Go My Way
ELO = Out Of The Blue

There's more, but that's my top five.
