How to use Avid hardware with other apps after closing PT

If I start my computer fresh, I can use my Avid I|O with 3rd party apps like Room without an issue. Open Roon, select the Thunderbolt HD hardware as the output device and audio is routed there.

However, if I then open ProTools and quite ProTools, that ability to use the Avid I|O disappears until I restart the system.

I know I need to reset the hardware, but how do I do this? In the old days, this would occur and I'd open Digi Setup (whatever it's called), reset the hardware, then the 3rd party apps could immediately use that audio interface again.

How do I use the Avid I|O without restarting the computer???

Seems like something specific to your system, and OS/HD driver version? I can be playing a YouTube video in chrome using HD hardware as the default audio output. Opening pro tools will take control of the HD hardware, but closing Pro Tools will immediately return the hardware to the OS and the YouTube video will start outputting sound again.

This happens quite consistently across my system. Wavelab, Reaper or Ableton will flag an I/O error when Pro Tools takes away the hardware, but they all resume working just fine as soon as Pro Tools closes and returns the hardware to the operating system.

I’m running Catalina and 22.5 here.

This was resolved for me with the 2022.5 hd driver. 2022.4 was terrible about this.

Try killing (from Activity Monitor) and restarting the AvidAudioServer process (restart from Applications>Avid>Avid Audio Server folder)

I'm using PT 2022.5 w/ Monterey 12.4. Trashcan MacPro w/ HD Native Thunderbolt.

Yes, I seem to remember that this worked in the past, but it doesn't seem to play nice now, even though I've had PT 2022.5 installed since Day One.

That is strange indeed.

I'll try quitting the audio server -- it makes sense to me that that is involved.

Personally, I have always preferred to keep things separated, and still do. Since my monitor controller has optical SPDIF in, I route that connection from my computer and select Pro Tools or computer audio with the push of a button. Advantage? It always works

I have that as well but there are times when I prefer to listen through, or grab an input from, the Avid hardware.
