Default The New Imac G5 1.6 1G of RAM with MBOX & PTLE 6.4

Has anyone used the MBOX or 002 with the new Apple Imac G5's? I am running into what I think are performance issues.

Can you be specific about what performance issues you're having?

I can't even have 8 tracks with Reason open and less than 5 plug ins without the CPU holding off USB error message coming up.

If you're using only the internal drive, turn off journaling in Disk Utility.

I tried your suggestion, however when I go to the disk utility the enable / disable journaling is there but unable to be selected (greyed out).

On my system, I open Disk Utility, select a volume, then Apple-J to enable or disable Journaling on that volume. When a volume is selected, a summary at the bottom show the Mount Point, and the format, Mac OS Extended or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) are what you'll normally see, though other formats are possible.

You need to use an external firewire drive with the oxford 911 chipset that runs at least 7200rpm. I believe the internal drive of the imac is 5400rpm?? That will cause that problem every time. You should never record to the internal drive. this could be your main problem. I get probably 16 tracks with a few reverbs, several eqs, compressors etc. on an imac g4 800

Simply stated - baloney.

The internal drive on a G5 iMac is 7200rpm, SATA - and though it's not recommended, it should actually work pretty well. With 1G of RAM, you can trust that the Virtual Memory system won't be making unexpected demands on the drive while you're recording. Ideally, a dedicated audio drive has advantages, but recording onto the system drive isn't a formula for instant problems.

I can do a surprising amount on my PowerBook's internal 4200 rpm drive.

The Imac is just fine. The machine kicks ass! I am not doing something right. I disabled journaling on the system disk. I am writing a project now with reason and sampletank open, that's it, and I cannot go for more than 20 sec before the CPU holding off USB error comes up. What do you suggest? JL

I FIGURED IT OUT!!!!!!!!! Anyone with an MBOX CPU holding off USB problem, listen up!! If you keep getting that horrible error message "CPU holding off USB..." go to your energy saver icon in the system prefs panel, set them ALL to NEVER, uncheck put hard disk to sleep....., go to the options tab and select "highest" for the processor (NOT AUTOMATIC). The last step is the most important and is probably the only thing holding you back.
