Default hard drive enclosure

Hi all

I think this enclosure (link below) with a 7200 SATA seagate barracuda disk inserted will be pro tools qualified but can I get a second opinion or two?

They have a heat-sink, but where is the actual cooling system?

good point - drives get hot at the best of times - this could be a killer.

then again, it does look nice

"I'd like excessive heat for $500, please"
"WHAT IS, THE #1 REASON THAT HARD DRIVES CRASH AND BURN FOR AUDIO AND VIDEO"??

Seriously---that is a huge factor, and IS the #1 contributor to why drives just lock up. Imagine if you're running a marathon in 115-degree weather in the beating sun down on you while it's 100% humidty. YOUR BODY WILL PASS OUT......some will be sooner than others, some longer than others. But eventually, it is going to happen. Read my article here:

I don't completely agree with Brad's article. Just to add a different perspective...

Modern drives are much better at dissipating heat, even the high performance models. Your average 7,200rpm hard drive (2.5" or 3.5") will operate up to 60C without issue. In general, your 2.5" drive will operate cooler. In a properly designed passive case (like G-Tech's for example), even pushing it hard in a room with a reasonable ambient temperature (below 26C), you shouldn't get near 60C. You likely hover around 50C, actually.

My main issue with the Glyph drives is the fact they have the power supply in the case. I know they use this as a selling point, but the main problem with that is the heat that is generated by placing it there REQUIRES an active cooling solution.

The nice thing about using 2.5" drives is the handling robustness. Your average 2.5" drive will handle over 300G's without breaking, while your average 3.5" drive will handle about 30G's. Meaning if you transport your drive around at all, and you knock your backpack or sling over while jamming a sandwich in your face, the 2.5" drives will be more likely to survive. They are not bullet proof, but they're designed to be mobile.

I've worked in studios for the past three decades. The only drives I've personally seen fail are Glyph drives. THREE of them (three different occasions; three different studios). I've NEVER seen another brand die while working in the studio.

I'm just sayin'...that is my real-world experience. Your mileage may vary.

Don't believe the hype.

There were a pile of non-working LaCie drives at the last studio I performed in. It was their reminder to not buy LaCie drives anymore. :)
