Question Help needed - 002R stopped working - Clock problem ?!

Hello all,
my first post here, have lurked around (used the QuadCore build thread to build my DAW),
my apologies for posting this in case this has been addressed before,
but I ran into a problem yesterday, and need to solve it ASAP.

My 002R all of a sudden stopped working, in mid session.
(connected to a quadcore PC running PT8)

All of a sudden the "Pro Tools has lost connection to the interface" (or similar) error dialog popped up and I couldn't get it up and running again,
tried restarting PT, powercycled the interface, reconnected FW cable (tried both slots on 002R) to no avail.

I think the problem may be clock related in 002R because when now when I turn it on it seems to be looking for a clock, you can hear the relay clicking away inside the unit, at the back you can see the Optical Out blinking (in time with the relay) and it doesn't settle on a sample rate.

Has anyone experienced this and/or has anyone any idea what to do to fix this,

thanks in advance
Gitareigandi

Sounds like it could possible be the infamous power harness problem. Units that have a serial number that end in A-F have a flaw in the internal power harness.

For a permanent fix, contact Digidesign/Avid support. They will get some info from you and can send you out a new harness. (I'm not sure what the process is these days, but it was super easy when I did mine)

For a temporary ASAP solution, open the unit (unplugged, of course) and re-seat the power harness several times. Using contact cleaner can sometimes also be helpful.

A word of warning,
I checked youtube if they had any tutorials of how to do the power harness reseat...

turns out the search comes up with a bunch of strap on [bleep][bleep][bleep][bleep][bleep] demos,
not quite what I expected (threw up in my mouth a little bit)

oh well,
carry on,

cheers

Since you have the rack version, you don't need a video as its rather simple. Pop the top cover and face the unit toward you. The power supply is bolted to the right side. Start by reseating the connector on each side of the PSU 5-6 times each. Now follow the larger harness from the PSU to the next connector, reseat that one 5-6 times, then follow to the 3rd and last connector and repeat. Done. 002 controller users have 1 more connector(under the firewire PCB) and remove the bottom panel instead of the top(way more screws). They also need to go slow as the PSU is bolted to the bottom cover.
