Default HUGE File size: Converting to DNxHD

Hey all,

Thanks for your help in advance.

The issue:
I have a two hour performance that was recorded on a GoPro and an external hard disk recorder. The GoPro split the performance into multiple files of 4GB each. My goal is to be able to sync and mix the audio in Pro Tools. In order to work to the videos in Pro Tools, I have used Shutter Encoder to convert them to DNxHD.

However, the resulting files, after conversion, are 34GB each (4GB before conversion). Is this normal? Any advice for managing the file size, but still being able to work with the video in Pro Tools? Thanks!

C.

My DNXHD36 has 13 GB for 44 Minutes
Did youchoose the right quality setting?

I honestly don't know. I left it as Type: 120 (which is the default setting for Shutter Encoder). The directions in the avid knowledgebase don't mention that setting at all... It only says to choose DNxHD and select "Generate in OP-Atom Format"

The video on the GoPro was recorded in 720 60fps. I choose 720 vs the higher res options specifically to conserve file size. But, are you thinking that having it be at 60FPS might be what's driving up the file size?

I just don't understand how a relatively high/native format could be converted to what's described as a "lossy" format and then have the file size grow so drastically...

Thanks again for all the help.

Hi
I am not familiar with what frame rates you work in US.

Assuming that 30 Frames are normal you double your data if you work with 60 frames, And then when you choose a higher (unneccesary) quality setting (as it is 120) you further increase the already doubled size about 3 times.

To lower your data and make PT run snooth:

First you should choose a lower datarate so you keep the 60 frames if you need.
You could also skip every second frame in the advanced features of Stutter encoder and change the video to 30 Frames.
