Sony VAIO desktops
I noticed that Digi did its tour with Sony VAIO - are the Sony desktops as compatible as the notebooks? I've looked everywhere and I couldn't find any motherboard specs for the desktops. My cause for concern is that the integrated graphics is SIS.

Re: Sony VAIO desktops
I went to that tour and was pretty disapointed. Not a lot of good info... One of the reps was even telling everyone that AMD's were not approved by Digidesign... I corrected him, but he said that he was 99% sure that p3's and p4's were the only CPU's officially supported by digidesign.
Both of the people running the program use Macs not PC's to run PT, and they seemed to think that Macs were faster than PC's The guy running the software skipped over Sampletank and after the show I went up and asked to hear it and he got very nervous. When he tried to open it the VAIO crashed and after about four tries he still couldn't get PTLE to open again... So Richie, my advice to you would be: Go with a AMD powered PC built to Allen's specs. You'll save about $1000 and experience at least twice the performance. |

Re: Sony VAIO desktops
hi, i'm new to pro tools. i bought a sony vaio desktop PCV-RX850 about a month ago. i bought the digi 001 last night. i did not perform enough due diligence before buying the 001 because i found out today from digidesign's website that the 001 is incompatible with SiS chipsets. i called sony and a lady said that desktops above the RX-870 do not use SiS chipsets.
i did go to the ProTools/Intel/Sony Vaio seminar in LA a couple weeks ago and assumed that all vaios (especially the newer models) were compatible with the 001. BUT.... I tested out the digi 001 with my vaio anyway and it worked fine. so who knows. i'll play around with it some more. if i have problems then i'll return the 001 and get the delta 1010. it's too late to return the vaio. a couple other negatives about the sony RX850: the graphics card is integrated so uses up system RAM. the hard drive is 5400 rpm and the manual says the 001 needs a 7200 rpm, but is that just a recommendation for speed sake or is it a must? does anyone know? another ques: does anyone know how to repartition the hard drive. my one physical drive came partitioned as c: 16G, d: 60G. but i want to make the c: drive 76G since PTLE can't write to partitions. thanks alot.

Re: Sony VAIO desktops
Mine is a RX 540 and I write to the second partition all the time...I'm using the 002 with version 5.3...I don't know if this makes a difference or not but haven't had any problems yet....Ted
