Default Mac OS Rom Boot Failure! Anyone experience this one?

Wow! Keep your bootable CD handy (and a copy of your system, system resources, Mac OS Rom, and Finder just to be safe)

Sometimes the P Ram zaps work. Other times not.

I haven't a clue why this does this. But I suspect that Initio card has something to do with it...

Yes, I too have experienced this phenomenon with a brand new G4 using os9.0.4, Protools 24 mix plus, 4x888's and v5.0 software. If you temporarily boot off of an Apple system software CD and then boot off the internal it seems to clear out whatever's getting stuck. I don't know what the card you mentioned is, but I'm using an ATTO PCI/ultrawide SCSI adaptor with Protools Express software for initializing drives and creating partitions/volumes and it's very tempermental. Hopefully someone out there will have some answers.

The new UMA motherboard in your G4 uses a different ROM that the old macs. The old macs had a ROM "chip" on the motherboard. The new UMA uses a ROM 'file"..that can become corrupted..etc.

I wish I could be more help..but..basically the idea is..that a "file" is a lot easier to corrupt for various reasons than a "chip'.

Check the Apple TIL tech library..and do a search for info.

Sorry I couldn't be more help...but ..I suspect..that in the course of installing or updating your scsi card (the inito also uses a rom file updater)...it somehow freaked the boot rom file and..the cd ..simply restored the file. (something like..when your icons go blank..and a desktop rebuild fixes it).
