Studio Bass Traps Etc...
Hey Kids,
Well, it's time for a studio environment upgrade. Frankly, I like Auralex foam, but wondered if there are better bass trap/ sound enhancing wall treatment alternatives available. I've got about 500.00 spare at the moment and want to begin with that. My mixing room is small. 9x14 with 8 foot ceiling. The mixing desk faces a wall with a center (double hung) window dead center. There is a (shelf) of sorts that goes all the way around the room about 4ft off the ground. This is really just a short wall that sticks out from the maim wall and is covered brick. (covered in drywall). There is a soffit that spans the width of the room roughly 10 feet back from the front wall and hangs down about a foot from the drywall covered ceiling. Directly behind the listening position is a closet with sliding doors that meet in the middle about 7 feet wide. I've been to heaps of forums about room mods, but wondered what everone "else" is talking about. Would love to hear from the lot of you~ Cheers! ~J

Re: Studio Bass Traps Etc...
Auralex foam and bass traps are two separate things.

Re: Studio Bass Traps Etc...
Sure they are tele,
I am just looking for ways to neutralize my room. I have a ton of early reflections in this room, and there is a serious amount of uneveness in the bass response. I'm just looking for more ways to make it acoustically sound, that's all I guess. I should have been more clear about that. I have done nothing to this room to make it "mixable" and wondered where other pros like yourself might start if you were me..

I just bought a package from foambymail too. Great stuff, at a fraction of the cost.

Re: Studio Bass Traps Etc...
It has been shown in studies that foam is not very effective at absorbing low frequencies. For a room your size, I would recommend buiding your own traps using 703 rigid fiberglass. For more info, please see http://www.ethanwiner.com/acoustics.html There is a lot of good acoustical information on the web. There is also a very helpful bunch of guys here http://www.musicplayer.com/cgi-bin/u...=0;DaysPrune=0 (READ THE FAQs)
Do your homework and you will be satisfied! Paul |

Re: Studio Bass Traps Etc...
I not only did the homework, but made all of my traps with the 703 rigid and MAN what a diff. it truely made in my rooms. The cost to do it yourself it so cheap it is stupid that the real traps are so much. I respect them and all, but I have made 15 traps that look fantastic at a cost no more than $400.00 bucks for the materials. AGAIN 15 and about 7 more to make.....
Build them as they are easy to do. - Doc

Go to this site, read up a little, and build your own. You can do it for about 1/10 the cost of buying them. I got some rigid fiberglass, doubled up the sheets, and used weed block fabric that I got cheap from target. I made just under 30 traps for less than $400, each one was 2ftX4ftX4 inches thick. |
