Default destructive audio editing

Long time Logic user fairly new to PT. I'm wondering how to access similar functionality to Logic's Audio File Editor in Pro Tools. I need to be able to actually edit the audio file (add silence, change gain, fades, draw over clicks, etc.)

Default destructive audio editing

Use the pencil tool for clicks. (Destructive)

Insert silence for silence or seperate clips along the timeline. (Non destructive)

Use the fade tool for fades. (Non destructive)

Use clip gain to adjust the gain. (Non destructive but can be committed to file)

To have a contiguous file with all your edits, either commit the edit selection or easier option is to use consolidate audio.

Thanks. I was just hoping there was a similar workflow in PT. I'm sure it will become quicker for me after more practice.

Not a Logic user so can’t say I really know how their Audio File Editor works, but personally, I’d rather not have those kind of things done destructively to the parent file.

The other thing that most other DAW users need to get accustomed to with PT is that the Edit window is essentially the only window you need to deal with. There’s no opening a seperate edit window to get sample level editing like other apps. It’s one of the main benefits of PT IMHO and the reason why I’d find it hard to switch. Everything is just there in the one window.

Yes, echoing Sardi,

Between use of the Edit Tools, Strip Silence, AudioSuite plug-ins, followed by consolidate to write your edits, PT includes probably most of the functionality of other audio file editors directly in place in the edit window.

Hi
I moved from Logic to Pro Tools recently, I know theres a setting in PT preferences to choose destructive editing, but I am away on holiday at the moment without PT in front of me, so I cant remember exactly where its is in the menu bar.

I don't have it checked personally.

Destructive editing? New to me.

Destructive recording? Definitely. Used frequently by post guys to punch in on long files. Saves consolidating.

But yeah, aside from the pencil tool, don’t think there’s any other destructive editing in Pro Tools. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

This also begs the question of why you would want this? One of the best things about any modern DAW is being able to undo edits. If you are concerned about drive space, just my opinion, but drive space is so cheap that it should never be an issue

When I edit dialogue with RX I often do so non destructively saving as .rxdoc format, but when I write the file at the end of the day I need a final export.

An .rxdoc of a 25 min file might be 15+ GB. Many people have a budget tighter than >that< so "overwrite file" in RX instead of Save As .rxdoc, or it is merely a workflow thing.

I'm with you, I'm earning money with my audio editing, so getting more space and the ability to undo and redo some work makes more sense. It's worth it to use a few of my hard earned cents!

There many times when I am working a quick consolidate makes quicker work and I know I won't be undoing that move, so it is natural.

The final answer? Can Pro Tools destructively edit? "Yes kind of". You just have to consolidate and not undo. You'll get a file and session that cannot go back, but you might also have extra files no longer referenced but in the clip list.

It's built to be non destructive. It's also built to be destructive
(see the whole of Audiosuite functionality : )

I'm interested in this topic because workflows can be complex and the interplay between the ability to go back and the ability to go forward can be important at any moment.
