Any thoughts on SSD?
I'm running PT9 on an 8 Core 3Ghz Mac with 8 Gigs Ram.
I'm wondering if I would see a substantial performance boost in PT9 and using several virtual instruments by getting an SSD and putting my System stuff, P/T9 and my sample library on it? Does anyone of you do this? And if you do, can you recommend a manufacturer? Many thanks for your time, Harry. |

Re: Any thoughts on SSD?
According to Avid Audio System Requirements SSD are not supported nor recommended.

AND you don't want your OS, PT and samples on the same drive. Samples should have a dedicated drive.

Re: Any thoughts on SSD?
If one is using a large number of VI's and/or large sample sets optimal performance will be achieved with a dedicated sample drive.
But... The most important "drive" issue is insuring that audio, and only audio, is recorded on a dedicated drive. If one only has two drives, samples should then go on the OS (system) drive (along with the PT program). And assuming one doesn't use too many VI's and/or large sample sets performance should be reasonably okay...

Re: Any thoughts on SSD?
SSDs "DO" indeed affect PC Performance ... but "NOT" Pro Tools 9 !!
Everything loads in matter of seconds, from system boot, to any other application except !! "PRO TOOLS" which takes few minutes to load on a windows based PC. So, Bottom Line, if you are using a PC System, SSD will only affect your PC Performance except pro tools 9, and if you want to go for any SSD I would recommend only those 2 after doing a lot of researches: 1: Intel SSD 2: OCZ Vertex 3 ... If it wasn't for me using other stuff on my PC, i wouldn't bother myself installing an SSD on any PC ... |

Re: Any thoughts on SSD?
I'v not noticed any substantial performance boost inside PT9. Windows boot time and PT9 startup time however is much faster!

Re: Any thoughts on SSD?
If you use a lot of VI's, you would be better to use VE pro or Reaper 64Bit rewired to PT for performance IMHO.
64Bit Reaper will give you access to all of your 8GB of RAM.

Re: Any thoughts on SSD?
Has anyone tried ProTools 9 on a Mac Book Air yet?
Maybe recording only 4 to 10 tracks or so on the internal SSD or an external USB drive? Now before someone starts reciting the compatability docs like the bible, you can ask any Avid field tech about recording to USB or the internal drive and they will tell you that you should be able to record 2trks, play at least a 3rd of the max track count and use plenty of VIs. The Mac Book Air 13" screen might be too small.

I've been using just two: one for data and song files, and one for the software. I may have to add a third though anyway. The samples are eating up a lot of space. In any event, a SSD for the OS will speed up the machine.

Re: Any thoughts on SSD?
Thank you all very much for the advice. It sounds as if an SSD won't help much with performance other than loading the System and Applications super fast, and that's not worth it for me.
I appreciate the time taken to answer my question, Best Harry. |
