Default Firewire Solution G5 Dual 2.0

Hello - My firewire drives, Glyph and Lacie, worked perfectly with my G4 dual 500 under OSX running PT 6.4. Now that I have upgraded to a G5 Dual 2.0, the system freezes when either drive is plugged in. I have reformatted the drives, installed the latest firmware and replaced my logic board in the G5. Nothing works. I am looking to buy a new firewire drive to see if maybe the new 911 chip set will fix things.

Here are a couple I am looking at

http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Pa...=FW&Template=1
http://www.store.yahoo.com/medeacorp/graid160.html

I am running

HD 3
G5 Dual 2
1.5 gigs ram
160gig sata drive
74 gig 10K internal sata
192 i/o

Anyone with similar set-up and working firewire solution, please weigh in!

Thanks.

Markk, I have this set up with no problems:

HD 2 Accel
G5 Dual 2
1 gig ram
160 gig sata drive system drive
160 gig 7200K internal sata Pro Tools drive
192 i/o
External firewire enclosure: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...155-205&DEPA=1
with a Seagate 75 gig HD.

Not sure why yours doesn't work.

Yeah, I have spoken with Mac, Digi, Pro Tools experts, and replaced the logic board, etc. It is really really strange. How quiet is the enclosure? I have one like it with a DVD writer, but the drive is super loud.

The firewire enclosure is loud, more the little fan than anything. The drives within it are not to bad, but with the G5 being so quiet, it makes the enclosure seem that much worse when I have it on. I use it more for backups or to dump to the internal drive. My track count never get that high anyways, or that dense in edits that the interenal one can't handle it. Sorry I can't help you though.

Is it connected to firewire in the front or the back of the G5? the front Firewire port on some G5 systems has some issues. I have seen a G5 crash with firewire peripherals in the front port that work fine in the back ones...

As you may have guessed, I have tried both ports, with no success. I am able to work off of the internal 10K drive no problem, but it is not ideal as sometimes I will work on sessions that client's bring on external drives and I would like the system to work as it did on my dual 500 - where I could run sessions off of firewire drives.

Markk,

What type of crashing occurs? When working in PT or just working on the OS level? If the problem occurs in PT, check to see if you formatted OS Extended with Journaling On. This will cause endless problems working on External Firewire drives. If so, reformat with Journaling Off.

Formatted with Journaling off. Crashes occur in PT and also when PT is not launched. It is VERY frustrating.

Well...for the first time I am able to duplicate the problem without firewire attached.

Here's a question - in preferences - how much of the processor is dedicated to Pro Tools for the majority of users? I am thinking this is a processor problem now.
