M2 Thoughts?

Looks like Apple has their new chips coming out in the Mac Book Air and a 13 inch Mac Book Pro. I suppose some version will end up in the new Mac Pro when it comes out.

Curious of your thoughts on the new chips.

While the Apple silicon stuff overall is impressive the whole WWDC announcements were a let down and align with speculation that Apple is having to deal with major supply chain issues and may have taken what was originally a minor bump to the M1 and are re-positioning that as M2, with the major bump delayed to a future release. Upping the memory to 24GB probably a good move.

Otherwise no Mac Pro, no other new hardware like AR glasses, etc. which seems to align with supply chain problem rumors. Yes even with all the previous impressive stuff with new Macs like the Studio (some of which have slow delivery, again supply chain) this was a let down.

I wish I could get back that hour I spent watching the conference. There was little to get excited about. The M2s seem to be slightly quicker M1s; hardly worthy of a new name, imo. No surprise -- speculation had suggested as much. They focused on efficiency instead of horsepower, with graphs showing energy consumption instead of processing abilities. That didn't leave me optimistic for a chip with a new name.

What this announcement really means to me: I don't feel shortchanged by having just ordered a machine with an M1.

Yep. That would be my take. All in all a bit disappointing however most sites that speculated didn't think much was coming this week.

I'll see what the next Mac Pro is before I choose. Hopefully something exciting.

Some are calling it M1.5, and the real new processor will be called M3. Next year.

The new M2 chip is still based on the same 5nm process as M1, so gains are fairly moderate. I don't think anyone with an M1 will see significant advantages of going to an M2. Next year should see a 3nm chip and then it could be more impressive.

Give me a Mac Studio with an M3 Ultra, DDR6 Ram, and upgradable storage. I don't mind the +$800 for 128GB Ram, but +$2200 for 8TB is insane.

I'm most looking forward to an iPhone with a USB-C port and Always on Display. Things Windows Phone and Android had 8 years ago.

I've always opted for the MBP over the Air because it brought something I felt was necessary, but looking at these new Airs I don't think I can justify the MBP any longer.
