Heat is simple but effective. Phoenix rocks. Waves MPX, Nomad Magnetic, UAD's Studer are 3 alternatives(UAD's plugin is great but requires a UAD card). I have not heard the Waves or Nomad plugins yet.

As a HEAT owner, I demoed Phoenix recently to see if I was missing out on anything. Although the Phoenix plugin is very good, HEAT is built into the mixer in a very convenient way. I found Phoenix to be a bit more subtle than HEAT, but it also makes everything louder so you have to do a bit of level matching to make sure the changes you're making are actually better. (There is no output trim on Phoenix)

In my experience, running HEAT on all audio channels and then running Dave Hill's new "RA" plugin on Aux busses is an excellent combination. I'd encourage you to check out both of those (HEAT and RA) before investing in Phoenix. Also, in terms of dsp efficiency HEAT takes up about 3% of an Accel chip so it is very dsp efficient.

Here's the video for RA for you to check out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tb0_NMW3Y0

Phoenix & Heat, Phoenix & Heat, I've read all the comparisons, and it makes no sense to me. Believe me - I live in Phoenix, and we have all the HEAT! We're expecting 109 degrees today! It's a dry heat, though. If you like it wet, you'll have to go elsewhere.

I thought the Heat were based in Miami. It is the Suns that are based in Phoenix.

Slate VCC and Waves MPX should also be considered before making a decision.

I have used it in a couple of mixes on specific tracks and like it. But IMHO, it is a bit more colored than the others mentioned here.

Thanks for the feedback Tom. I finally demoed it and I see what you mean, but it does have a good character (especially for the price, I decided pretty quickly that it was worth it!! LOL!!).

I've heard that the Slate VCC is really good, just waiting for my wallet to fill....
