Default Roland UM-ONE USB MIDI Interface Compatibility

I am going to try to figure out how to interface my new UM-ONE USB MIDI Interface with Pro Tools 11, one step (or question) at a time.

So let me start with a simple question:

1. Is the UM-ONE USB MIDI Interface that I have connecting my Roland JW-50 to my desktop operating under Windows 10 compatible with Pro Tools 11?

Compatibility with PT11 isn't the issue but compatibility with your computer hardware is. According to the Roland page for your piece (which is discontinued according to the product page) you're going to need the correct drivers for Windows 10 which are available for download from Roland. Install the driver and that is step one. I'd also suggest getting a free MIDI monitor program like MIDI-OX to help you diagnose your system.

MIDI monitors are a great piece of s/w to have when setting up a system and also diagnosing any possible MIDI problems. When you start getting signals through that you expect at least you know that much works. For the rest of setting things up I'd suggest a good read through of the PT User's Guide (aka The Manual) as it's full of all kinds of useful info. There's no such thing as an easy ride into PT-land but the journey is worth it. If you're a complete newbie at this sort of thing I'd suggest getting the PT101 courseware book from Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

Thanks for the response. I did check the MIDI signal with MIDI-OX, so we are good there.

The second question is:

2. Using the UM-ONE with Pro Tools, would I create an Instrument track or MIDI track for proper receipt of MIDI signals via the the UM-ONE USB interface?

You can use either but remember you'll have to point the MIDI track to a track that has the instrument you want to use. An Instrument track contains the MIDI to drive the vi and is a return for the audio from the vi. But then again, if you would actually READ the User's Guide (manual) you'd know this. And PLEASE get the PT101 courseware book to help you along. These are basic questions that can be answered by reading the materials I write about.
