Default Help with 'old-school' Tangerine Dream sound???

If anyone could guide me in the right direction for obtaining (or approximating) within PT the following Tangerine Dream sound, that would be wonderful. The TD sound is from their 'Thief' soundtrack (circa 1981) and kicks in within the following link at approximately 2 minutes and 10 seconds into the track. It's hard to miss.

Thanks.

It would help if you explained a bit more which sound you're looking for help on. At about your time mark there's a drone sound going on as well as a couple of different arpeggiated lines. If that's what you're talking about (any of those) Synthmaster at kv331 should be able to cop that sound (it might even have it already programmed in one of their expansion preset banks). There's a distorted sound that comes in at about 2:45 or so and that sounds like a guitar through some kind of distortion or overdrive effect.

Its a pretty signature TD type sound. They had some very similar arp'd sounds going on in their famous Risky Business sound track (the train ride scene).

To re-create it, it might help to know what VI's you have to work with.

Of course. My apologies for not being more descriptive. The best way I can describe the sound (as I don't know exactly what it is yet) that fades in at 2:11 in the track, is that it is a sort of rippling (i.e. delay) percussive synth effect. It's definitely not the drone and the distorted sound at 2:45 is an electric guitar. Also, the sound in question incorporates ratchet sequencing...a sort of 'tripping' effect that I would also like to replicate. There happens to be a plugin that does ratchet sequencing, but, it is Windows only and I am on a Mac.

Thanks.

I was hoping to use the VI's native to Pro Tools. I also have the V4 virtual analog collection from Arturia but don't even know where to start. Thought I would ask here.

Thanks again.

You might be able to do it with Structure using one of the strings sounds with a faster attack. Play with the attack envelope a bit to give it slightly softer attack, like you can hear on the TD track. Then, play with the filter and such to get the tone you want. Maybe some EQ, then add some delay and reverb, and I think you'll be pretty darn close. You may also find a good string like sound in Xpand that could work as the basis to build on. Good luck!

Thanks very much for the tips. Will give it a shot!

Is it possible to run a Windows only plugin within a Mac in an application like Pro Tools? The reason I ask is because I would love to use the plugin I mentioned in an earlier post within this thread to help with obtaining some TD sounds.

Not possible.
You could probably with some work replicate what the plugin does in a standard arpeggiator.

Don't forget that PT has a step sequencer built into the MIDI editor.

Thanks for all of the helpful replies. I really appreciate it.

I was told by a close friend of mine who I inquired with as well regarding this topic, and, he suggested that the DAW Ableton Live is more appropriate than Pro Tools...as it has a more sophisticated step sequencer and arpeggiator built in. I am not familiar with the DAW Ableton Live. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks again.
