Midi notes turned black, won\'t play

I'm running PTLE 5.3.1 on xp and I needed to rename diomidi.dll in order to open PT. Now the midi notes have turned black and I've lost the ability to assign input channels (it's stuck on "All") and output channels (I get "none" or the Microsoft synth). I believe it all goes back to the diomidi file, but I can't open PT w/ it, and midi doesn't seem to work w/o it. Would upgrading to 6.4 do any good? Thanks in advance.
