Default Will RealPlayer .ram files play in anything else?

I hate RealPlayer, and don't want to install it, but there's plenty of sites that use it.

on mac:
in quick time, no
in itunes,no
couldn't import in peak4,
in live it didn't even show,
in vlc, it looks like it was going to open, but,
gave message: unable to determine stream type.
anyway none of them have .rm files as an option to open nor import.
cheers sailor.

i have this program called SoundConverter,
that does convert to or from .rm files,
though it's only for mac
this is the one and it's pretty cheap.

I'm PC based.

The last time I tried RealPlayer it insisted on having access to the internet, changing my file associations, and doing all kinds of stuff I didn't like or understand (which I didn't like either). WMP is prone to do that too. I only use WMP when I'm disconnected.

VLC on the other hand simply opens and either plays your file (most of them) or doesn't. It doesn't set about doing other things - like making net connections - cos some twit programmer thinks it's clever to take over your system. I prefer VLC.

There must be players that will just play RealPlayer files without messing with your system like it does. You won't find any commercial players doing it because of licensing reasons.

Thanks for looking though.

I found a forum thread on it here. Seems I'm not alone in disliking RealPlayer...

Karel,
RealPlayer should have a list of file types under Options/Preferences. There you can disable any file types other than .ram files, so it will open play those.

Follow my link above and you'll see that there's more to it than that.

It's a video nasty.
