what is odd is when the Sync HD came out we were told is that it was only a skin job and currently both units use the same Firmware package from what I can tell
there is no separate package for blue or gray (OMG Avid's having an Civil War identity crisis)

I recall the same story. And quickly looking at the new unit, I'm not sure what it does that the blue Sync HD doesn't.

NOT true at all

The Sync HD is exactly that… (HD) it has the ability to use and lock to all the current HD frame rates for HD/SDI and is update-able if and when the 2K and 4K formats become more abundant in use

The Sync IO uses firmware 1.2x and the Sync HD uses Firmware 2.2x

this also reflects the improved frame rate support as mentioned

The sync IO will work fine with the HDX cards it just won't work with HD/SDI, and SDI frame-rates
Now wheather or not future software updates will allow it or deny its function-ability is completely up to Avid at their digression
( its a software function ) HDX hardware and Current hardware are at the HW level functions shouldn't be a frame rate dependent issue

FYI the Sync HD video input will not sync to serial video ,( NTSC, PAL only )
which seems unusual because it won't allow the video burn window using HD/SDI or SDI signals

The dude,

The discussion here is about the (lack of) differencies between blue Sync HD and gray Sync HD, not about the differencies between Sync IO and Sync HD.

But is there any difference b/w the Digi Sync HD (blue) and the Avid Sync HD (gray) other than its support-ability beyond PT10?

Actually my Sync I/O has been going strong with My HDX mac rig for months in PT 10. BUT when I go to 11 it stops working. :{
PS I use the serial mac cables from 10 year ago. The printer cables…

Yes, don't get confused here -- there are three sync boxes:

- Digidesign Sync I/O (blue)
- Digidesign Sync HD (blue)
- Avid Sync HD (grey)

AFAIK, both Sync HD's are the same, but very much different than the original Sync I/O.
