Default Slate Digital FG-X Virtual Mastering Console

I would love to get some feedback here of this plug
Im also thinking of Brainworx bx_xl
the idea is to use these plugs for demo mixes --so I can drive around in the car checking
I want to get my mixes as *loud* as what a mastering house would do

thanks in advance
David

I've owned FG-X for about 6 months now, and it is a very good limiter plugin. It has the unique ability to make things louder, while still retaining transients. The included RMS meter is also a real advantage. On the downside, FG-X is very processor intensive, so this is not a plugin that should be left on the Master Bus during a full mix. It works much better in a Mastering session where there is plenty of processing power to spare. I should also give you the heads up that there's a bug with FG-X where it will sometimes only play the audio out one side of the speaker. A restart usually fixes the problem, and the guys at Slate Digital are aware of it and currently working on a fix.

Being a HUGE Slate Digital Fan of Trigger and Stephen Slate Drums, I really wanted to love the Digital FG-X. However, from my experience of Demoing the Digital FG-X Virtual Mastering Console, I still liked the sound of limiting from DSM (Dynamic Spectrum Mapper) better. I know you didn't mention it. Most people probably don't look at the DSM as a finalizer plug-in, but I love it. I don't ever limit at 100:1 like the demos show. In fact, I usually use 2:1 and then push the level up into it's limiter. I do this after I have usually done some gentle compression on the master bus as well. I have been able to get the commercial loudness with great results using this plug-in and highly recommend it if you haven't tried it yet.

I think I demoed the DSM a couple years ago, but never tried it for this purpose. Thanks for the tip.
