Default Pro Tools 10 Aggregate problem (Rosetta+DIGI 003)

I want to use my rosetta 200 with my DIGI 003, i use Pro tools aggregate in PT10 and i have a strange problem :

WIth the rosetta only, i run 64 samples with no Error
WIth the DIGI 003 only, i run 64 samples with no Error
With the aggregate Device, i have a PT error 6101 at 128/256 samples

If i select in the playback engine only the rosetta with DIGI is power on, i have the same problem; if i shut down the DIGI the problem disappear !

In logic pro, no errors.

I try to sync the clock with a SPDIF cable, nothing change.

I use Rosetta for inputs and Digi for outputs of my PT session.
Mac Pro 2010 - 12 cores + OSX Maverick

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

The Rosetta has AES/SPDIF/Optical. Just link it to the 003 that way and have it come in on the digital I/O. Are those inputs free?

It’s a better solution long term as, whilst I haven’t had issues, Aggregating devices can be problematic.

Thanks for your support, inputs are free in the DIGI , i don't use them ;

if i understand well , i must use only The DIGI 003 firewire connection (not the Apogee firewire) and connect the SPDIF/OPT OUTPUT of the rosetta into the DIGI SPDIF INPUT.

No quality lost in this setup ?

Note : the main purpose is to have 2 inputs (Apogee Rosetta) and 4 outputs (2 monitorings - DIGI + 2 for re-amping guitars - Apogee).

Yes firewire to the 003. You can connect these multiple ways, S/PDIF coaxial, S/PDIF on TOSLINK optical, ADAT on TOSLlNK optical, ... with an output on the Rosetta 200 going to an input on the 003. But especially if using TOSLINK optical make sure both ends are set to the same protocol, S/PDIF or ADAT. You need to set the Rosetta 200 to the same sample rate as your session and you need to have both units clocked together. You can just set the 003 to clock from whatever digital input it is using or connect wordclock from the Rosetta to the 003 and clock from that (you probably should have been clocking both boxes together with wordclock when using aggregate I/O, not that you should use aggregate I/O).

I've given you enough here that you can read the Rosetta 200 and 003 manual if needed to work out how to do any of these.

Remember that wordclock and coaxial S/PDIF cables should be 75 ohm cables, i.e labeled 75 ohms, or labelled for S/PDIF or *digital* audio, or video, not "standard" analog audio RCA or 50 ohm BNC cables. The wrong cable may work for short links... but do it properly.

This is the proper way to use these boxes together, aggregate I/O is always better to avoid. There is no loss of quality as you are working digital.

Thanks Darryl for your support ! Last questions :

- have you got a brand for the S/PDIF 75 ohms ? i saw a mogami but it's not cheap = 44€/$.

- do i need 2 cables ?

Thanks

Any 75 ohm digital cable you want it’s all digital the cable makes no audio difference, if you get into the weeds the connector quality/proper 75 ohm connector helps a little with digital reliability for extreme long cables etc. but what I look for is mostly quality construction that will not fall apart in use. I either make my own or buy cable from Blue Jean cables in Seattle, sometimes custom made… they do it for less hassle than doing it myself. I have no idea in Europe. Amazon Basics cables are likely fine.

You can also just get any consumer TOSLINK optical cable and connect the boxes. However you do it, as long as the 003 is clocking from the Rosetta 200 you only need one cable. You only need the additional 75 ohm BNC cable if you want to use Wordclock. You likely have no reason to do that unless you have other digital gear. Grab a book on audio engineering if this stuff is not clear. I wanted to explain all options so you do not mess up, especially if you use TOSLINK make sure you have both ends set to the same S/PDIF or ADAT format.

i'm going to order a cordial : https://www.cordial-cables.com/en/products/cpds-cc

Thanks for your time Darryl, I will come back to you as soon as I have made the connections between the DIGI and the Rosetta.

What you want to do is link it using spdif rca. That way you have the option of adding 8 more inputs through adat if the need arises by upgrading your studio at a later date by bringing in an apogee 800 or something similar with word clock connects. Also, I might add, it depends on how long you plan on using the digi 003. I’m not sure what version it’s support ended.
