Default MIDI Sustain Pedal Drop Out During Record

Hi everyone!

I'm a new Mac and Pro Tools user and I've recently completed installing my system. I've encountered a serious problem recording MIDI data on instrument tracks.

In a new session if I create an instrument track with an instance of NI Akoustik Piano I can play the instrument with no problems. As soon as I arm the track and hit record, the sustain pedal events start to drop out erratically making it impossible to track a piano take properly. Thinking this might be a compatibility problem with NI, I tried the same thing with Digidesign's own Mini Grand and the same thing happens. Incidentally, I'm using the MIDI IN port of the 003 Rack+ and a Roland RD-170 as the controller.

I have been trawling through the various user groups and it seems that this issue has sprung up in various guises over the past couple of years. Some people have claimed that deleting certain plug ins (such as DIGI Rewire) solves the problem. I tried this but it doesn't work for me.

There is a work around. If I create a MIDI track and an audio track with a virtual piano instrument, I can route the output of the MIDI track to the instrument track. When I record in this way I have exactly the same problem as before. However, if I mute the MIDI track during the record process I can play fluidly with no sustain event dropouts whatsoever. I then have to unmute the MIDI track to hear what I've recorded.

I have contacted Digidesign support directly and the person I spoke to claims they have never encountered this problem. He said he would try and recreate the problem and get back to me. That was almost 2 weeks ago.

I am surprised there aren't hundreds of posts on this as I discovered the problem within seconds of hitting record on the instrument track. I can still be productive if I use the work around but the simple fact is this problem renders the instrument track concept practically useless.

I also have Logic Studio installed on my system and I have so far no issues recording on instrument tracks in that system.

I hope I'm doing something wrong and that this problem can be easily solved. Otherwise this is very very worrying indeed.

Please help!

Regards,
Yann.

Hi,

have a similar problem here - if I play the master keyboard, route through
PT 8 ( was also in PT 7), route back to midi modul, the sustain fails when
recording - not in playint wo recording
this is no problem in Logic 8 with the same hardware setup

regards

Mr.O

Glad to hear I'm not the only one Mr O.

Have you tried the work around? Does it work for you?

Anyone else having this problem? Is this a bug or are we doing something wrong?

I'd be curious if, when you record, you capture any of the sustain controller data...

Try recording and then change the Track View selector from "notes" to controller > "sustain (64)"

I can confirm that all MIDI sustain event information is being received and recorded.

What is your 'Default Thru Instrument' set to in Preferences>MIDI? What happens if you change it to your primary controller keyboard?
